My quilt gets caught in the machine!

If I had those problems after removing and reinserting bobbin and rethreading machine, I would lay down newspaper first and sew on top of it. I use this when appliqueing or sewing with minky!

I don't know if you are doing regular, machine quilting, or free-motion quilting. I'll address the regular, machine quilting.
Try using a walking foot on your machine. This will help to keep both, the top and bottom layers moving in sync through the machine.
Also, check your throat plate. If it has a big, oval, needle hole it may be inviting fabric to get pushed down into the machine. If you have a different throat plate, with a small, round, needle hole, try changing to it and see how it works for you.
Make sure that the weight your quilt is not pulling on the machine. Give it some support by keeping most of the quilt in a corner of your table, or rolling it up on each side of the machine, so it is easier to handle.

First if you don't have a foot on your machine, that is very dangerous. You should always have a foot on your machine. ..whether it is a walking foot for straight stitching or a darning, or a free motion foot designed for your machine. Call a locall dealer and tell them the make and model of your mahine and get some feet. Go on line and look for beginning free motion instruction, there are a lot on you tube. If you are free motioning, also get a 90/14 topstithch needle (s).
Next, make a 12 in square quilt sandwich. ..a layer of còtton, batting and another piece of cotton fabric. Then get instruction on free motion quilting. .....then practice on the small 12 inch sq. I practiced my swirls on a piece of paper before going to my quilt sandwich when I first started...best wishes

Hi thank you so much for the reply, we decided to buy the quilting foot for free motion quilting in the hopes that this helps, and per your recommendation we roll up the extra fabric and I think this has helped a bit and made it more manageable!

Thank you so much for the kind welcome, it’s great to meet you all!! We’re doing free motion quilting so Are trying to make swirls on the fabric by moving it up and around. The needle sews just fine we don’t get a birds nest (we got this when we switched to the darning foot) but instead it’s just very hard to move the fabric to sew it?! Thanks again for the kind welcome

Did you position the presser bar lifter in the darning position when you put the darning foot on? As mermaid said "My machine has a setting for darning (or fmq) in the foot lift...it is not raised all the way up as for normal release when sewing, but rather you raise and nudge it to the left about half way up."

I would think you would need some sort of a foot on the machine....usually each model has a list of feet to use when quilting...I assume you have the feed dogs down and are trying to move the fabric with your hands in swirls? ...So I would find your manual and look at what it suggest for doing free motion quilting....Go to the Pfaff website and see if can download a manual or even watch a video of doing quilting on the site.
