Do you have a logo? Perhaps have someone digitize the logo for embroidery. Keep it small , perhaps 4"x4" and the members can put borders around the design and then quilt it. Or you can can copy the logo onto printable fabric.

One of my guilds makes them out of quilt blocks that are about 1/2 the size of a potholder. Make the center in a white or light color so that people can write their names in, and attach a slim strap so members can hang them around their necks.
One person in our guild makes them and sells them to new members, but new members could just as easily make their own from scraps. It would make a fun, quick activity for a meeting, too.
For visitors, use the stick on name labels you can buy at a place like Office Depot or Staples.

Our Guild has badges printed at a copy place in town. We have to have 10 for the order, they are plastic with a tropical design and have magnetic backs. Only $7 each. Members can make their own or order the Guild badges.

We had a contest at our guild. Each member made their own, then we awarded a prize for the best. Also, if someone doesn't wear their nametag, they have to "feed the piggy" a quarter. At the end of the year we use that money to draw a member's name and award them a free year's membership. (I won this year.)
