When you piece a block and go to square it up, do you do so right side up or wrong side up?

I make sure all my seams are pressed, then square right side up. When I'm squaring up, the parts of the block I need to line up with are the seams visible on the right side of the block. In a half square triangle, for example, the seam I'm concerned about is the diagonal seam - when I square it up, I want to see that diagonal seam along the diagonal line of my ruler.

Funny you should ask that today... I have never before squared anything up on the wrong side. Like Roben said, I want to see the seams and there is one, or more, reference points in the block that I always want at the same measurement so they are all the same.

But, last night squaring up a bunch of HSTs that had either the same fabric on each side or two dark fabrics it was difficult to tell exactly where the seam was so, I turned them over and I am lining up the 45 degree angle on the thread line.

I had the same problem as Pam, so I too turned my HST over. Also, it occurred to me that I had another smaller cutting mat that was a lighter color than my Olfa. What a huge difference that made to these mature eyes!

Always from the right side. Sometimes I need to split the difference to make the seams line up (in a perfect world that wouldn't be a problem  ) so I want to see how the seams fit into the squaring process.

I have always squared up a block from the top side. But, if something works better for you, I think that is the right way to do it. Methods change all the time, right?
