I am in the process of building a modified french braid and have been trying to wrap my head around the concept of quilt as you go. I'm not a longarmer or a hand quilter and hate fighting a big quilt on the sewing machine. I've looked at a number of tut videos online and just seemed to get more confused. This is one link that seemed to make the most sense, at least to me:

In the video box, scroll down to the last one "Second Method.

I'm got a couple of strips pinned last night and going to give it a shot today; its been a stumbling block and hopefully this will help me hop over it! :-)

illinois,
I hand quilted this mini log cabin. I tried stitching in the ditch - too many seams for me - curves worked much better. Now this is only 15" square, you may have better luck with the straight lines on a bigger one. I do like the curves though.
Hope this helps, need more help just ask !

I just wanted to show you one other log cabin.
Using the strip cutting and chain sewing method has made
the log cabin a very easy quilt to do.

Thank you for your response plus the pictures! Nice job with the curves. I'm always open to suggestions for hand quilting and those directions that end with "quilt as desired" just leave me wondering what I'm going to do. And getting a design to fit is even worse!

I always hand quilt and us the ditch method. Looks good on both sides. I am blessed with being able to make really small stitches. That adds so much to a quilt's value in my area.

Wow, I really like your Log Cabin and what a neat way to end up with "sashing" between your blocks!
