I loaded a log cabin block in EQ7 that measured 7.5 inches. A layout of 7x8 blocks with a 1/2 inch binding on each side showed a finished size of 54x62. Then I asked EQ7 to give me fabric yardage. The result was 5 yards. EQ7 does use 40 inch as the fabric width and sometimes this can overstate fabric needed. At the very least, I would estimate that your quilt would take about 4.5 yards.


Edited to add: Keep in mind that every seam in that quilt uses 1/2 inch of fabric and there are a lot of seams in any log cabin.
2nd edit: Thanks to bearisgray for the reminder about the backing and batting. You used a lot more than the yardage that you originally calculated. I would have used about 2.5 yards for the backing. The binding has been included with the block yardage. So, my unverified, but best guess, is 7 yards of fabric for the blocks, backing and binding.

Your quilt is larger than the one in the links so you will allow for more fabric. I don't know your block size, but using 7 1/2" blocks in EQ7 I got a 63x70" quilt (9x10blocks) needing 5 yds + borders, backing & binding

After realizing that I didn't take into account that you had upsized your quilt, I decided to do an official EQ7 file. Maybe these will help you. I can email you a copy of the EQ7 file if you PM me your email. I did up the width of the usable fabric to 42". I don't know how to add applique to a block or quilt so that info is not included. I did use a standard log cabin block from EQ. I upsized it in my quilt to 7.5 inches. I used a fun bubbly green for the binding just so you would know how much EQ was estimating.

EQ7 front yardage is based on usable 42" and the binding totals 6 3/8 yards. For the size quilt you made, you needed 4 yards of 42" backing, which comes to a total of 10 3/8 yards. Amazing how it adds up so quick, isn't it? And don't forget your batting cost.

Thank you ladies!!!!!!! You are excellent helpers. My quilt also has wide borders on it.
The backing and batting are not my problem as I'm just making the top. It is 7 x 8 rows with 7" finish blocks and a watermelon print border that is cut at 6" all the way around.
The quilt could read 'Christmas' except for the seeds and the borders.
I originally was going to quilt it on my Gammill but I've sold that due to health [back & hip} problems. My friend loves the way I quilted it but I just can't do it any longer. She has someone that will quilt it and has gone to look for backing fabric today.
You all have been a HUGE blessing to me........Thank you all again!!!!

I did the math & came up with 2.2 yds which is conservative & does not include all the seams. For good measure, I would round it up to 3 yards.

Don't over complicate it for yourself. What is the finished size? Add another 1/4 yd for seams. If you are only making the top multiply this yardage times whatever you normally pay for yardage in your area. Round it up or down according to how you feel and you have the number. (knowing how quilters are, you are going to underprice it anyway! LOL)
