Default Need pattern suggestions!

My friend has a new grandson on the way that I will make a quilt for. Her husband, my dear friend who died a couple of years back, had a red canoe that he loved, and I have found a 12 inch red canoe paper pieced block that I want to put in the center of the quilt. I need help with patterns that this would work with. I was thinking some sort of big block star might work, but have not found the right pattern yet. Any ideas? Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might have.

What about the 'crossed canoes' block?

How about a feathered star, and the canoe block could go in the middle, or if you're keen, you could put a canoe in each corner block as well. The quilt would be about 36" square, or longer if you add to the top and bottom. I think your HSTs would be finished about 2".
Another idea is to make those star points with all 2" or smaller pieces.

How big is the canoe you found? I might like to go a teeny bit modern and try something like this....not my quilt, and I don't know the maker...sorry about that. replace the elephants with a canoe, and change the colors to suit yourself. Even could use some outdoorsy prints if that is suitable. if you don't like the squares, multi coloured bricks would look nice too.

The Maker really made a nice quilt, wish I could give them credit for this!

Any of the deceased grandpa's shirts in your stash (or grandma's rag cupboard)? If not, can you come close with a plaid or color he might have worn?

How large of a quilt will you want to make?? You can always enlarge the canoe pattern to be a larger size. You could fill in the rest of the quilt with scrap D9P.

This pattern uses a large center square, I think 16" finished. You could add 2" borders around your 12" canoe block to make the center block. The small squares you see are 5" so a charm pack can be used or your stash.
Here is the link to the free pattern.
