I love the black and white musical theme fabrics I've seen. Have not seen the one with brights on black but you could combine either one with bright primary colors in a D9P or some other simple design and it would be spectacular.

Ditto ... D9P or D4P
Or black and white musical note fabric with a multi brigh coloured piano key border.
Or some appliqued music notes and symbols ... they wouldn't have to be in black and white ... could do in multi colours.
♪♫♫♪ Perhaps you'd be best to be honest with your DGD that you are somewhat stumped as to what to do. She may have some firm ideas ... and if you don't ask, she may be disappointed with what you decide to do!

I saw a picture of a baby quilt on this board where they appliqued the words
eat,
play,
sleep,
repeat
on the front of the quilt. The "play" could refer to playing music, right?
The background was all one fabric. You would do the background in white and black music note fabric, and then back it with the music note fabric with the primary color music notes. The words could be appliqued in red (or one of the other primary colors from the back) on the white and black side. Meander for the quilting and then bind it in the color you use for the words...it would be a more modern baby quilt.
