I need to buy a new iron. I don't want to spend $100; but I want something that will last more than a year. I am a 'steamer'; don't think I want the auto shut off, from what ppl have said here.

    What do you all suggest?

I have the Rowenta travel iron and it is perfect for piecework and it has steam. Because it is small and light weight it will not distort you blocks and it is easy to handle. My full size iron is a very cheap one from walmart and it is great for ironing fabric before cutting.

I have a Sunbeam and love it, but it has automatic shut off, I can never remember to shut one off.

I bought a "travel" iron from wmart for 20bucks, its a perfect size! not to big and not to small. also the water fill hole has a plug, no more spills when knocked over :)

We have very hard water and seems like no matter what kind of steam iron I buy or how I care for it by the end of the year I need a new one. Heck, I've bought irons for $30, travel irons, etc and even a Rowenta and in about 6 months white spots are coming out of those little holes. Now I am using distilled water in this new Sunbeam and will see how that goes. I want one that lasts using our normal country water. It seems like all appliances that need water out here clog up pretty fast. Can't count how many coffee pots we have gone thru even with the cleaning of different cleaners, including the vinegar treatment. UGH!

I have a cheap $10 iron I bought at the NEX. I have seen it at Walmart for about $12, I think. It does what it needs to do, no auto shut off, steams up a storm if you need steam. I've had it for years. I had another that was brand new sitting in the closet collecting dust and sent it to someone on the board who was needing an iron(can't remember who it was :( )

I am a big fan of Rowenta....the plate is fantastic! I have a regular one I got on sale at JC Penneys and the travel one that sits at my sewing station.
