When my bread and butter came from sewing, I bought myself a fairly pricey Black & Decker iron. That was about 20 years ago....it is still going strong. Since we have well water, I use water from our local grocery store that has an osmosis filtration system. Fairly cheap "insurance" to look after my investment.

There's only one feature on my Panasonic iron that makes me love it...the cord reel! If an iron gets hot enough, it'll work for me..I rarely, rarely, rarely use steam so that isn't an issue for me. Inexpensive makes sense to me...my cats are apt to find some way to knock one to the floor!

I have always had Black and Decker irons. They work fine for me and seem to last.

I had problems with mine Rowenta sputtering and leaking causing a burn on my thigh. I sit while iorning. I contacted Rowenta and they told me to use bottled spring water, Not Distilled. I was surprised as I thought I was taking care of my iron by using Distilled. I bought another Rowenta and now use Spring water.

I've had my Rowenta for about 12 years. You should only put "distilled water" in an iron to avoid the mineral deposits. Buy it by the gallon at grocery store. You can get a good Rowenta at Joann's when you have a 50% off coupon.

The Shark sell for about $59. It has more steam than any other iron I've ever owned. I had two Rowentas and they bit the dust in less than six months. Another quilter got me started on the Shark.

If you happen to have a freestanding dehumidifier that you run in your house, using the water collected in that will solve your hard water problems with your iron. I keep the distilled water in jugs so that I can use it in y iron.

After my expensive Rowenta went out on me, I go to thrift stores. I bought a Sunbeam for $5.00 and love it. Some irons of course look bad, but this one was like new. Since then, I've noticed several other irons in thrift stores that look new; perhaps the owner bought herself a new Rowenta and gave her older, barely used iron to GoodWill. Since irons do not seem to last more than 3 years, I'll be buying them there!

I have tried the Rowenta irons and found them to be heavy and no better at ironing than the less expensive irons. I now use a B&B "quickpress" and a spray bottle for water. I've never had much luck with the steam features on irons and hate the hot steam that is hard to keep from your fingers! I bought the new dritz small plate iron that they sell at JoAnn's but it doesn't get as hot as I'd like so while it's a cute iron, I don't use it much.
