I forgot to get a picture, but did a similar bargello type quilt for nephew's wedding, then appliqued a sunset on going down in stages since they met at the beach. Made the quilting very easy too as it just needed sky/waves/beach.

My "go-to" pattern for what I think you are describing is STORM AT SEA. An appliqued whale would go very nicely on the pattern just about anywhere, and the rolling texture of the pattern would certainly look like ocean waves.

I bought some of those same fabrics (fat quarters) while in Anchorage a few years ago, and this is what I have started. It's called a batik blur, but probably won't fit into your ideas, but I like it. I wanted it a tad bigger so I went online and bought 4 more fat quarters. I had to take it down from the design wall, this is about half of it, so took pic so I could put it back together again.

I saw something like in QB, a class someone was taking. I looked on Pinterest, and it's called shimmering triangles there, there are different kinds, but mine is mostly like https://www.pinterest.com/pin/326299935482598816/ also exuberant color, the triangles project. I rarely ever use/buy a pattern, just make up something that I like from examples and when the size is correct, I go for it.

I want to make a quilt for DD to reflect memories of her Alaskan cruise. I located this fabric from a couple quilt shops in Alaska. I would like the quilt to look like waves and plan on appliqueing a whale breaching from a photo that she had captured. I need your ideas for a quilt pattern and also your input on the fabrics please. I can't wait to hear what your suggestions might be. Love the board =).
