I have an idea for a new type of presser foot that would be very helpful to quilters. Does anyone have a suggestion for how to pursue manufacture of the foot, or sale of the idea to someone who would manufacture it? I have no idea how to proceed, but I'm afraid once I describe the idea, someone else will do it. This board has so much information, I figure someone will have some suggestions.

I would think a patent lawyer for a consultation would be the first step....but that's just an uneducated guess... Let us know how this works for you. Good luck

Getting the prototype made is the biggest and very expensive hurdle. My inventor friend will patent his design and then sell the idea to a company already established. He does extensive research before applying for a patent. Many times the idea has been submitted before. Good Luck. I'd be happy to test it for you once it is made!

There use to be a PBS show when they choose 10 people to manufacture their product. As previously said, you need to make a prototype and get a patent which all costs money.

I took a class that had a little bit on patents while in college and I think you need to check it out as much as you can on the net but I do remember that you need to draw up the idea or write it up and date it and maybe have it notarized so you have proof of it being your design. If I were you I would do this before you went to a lawyer or patent person. Then I would use a copy of that to go for help and put the original in a safe secure place. Do your research.

When the inventor of the "little foot" took her prototype to a manufacturer, he stole her design and she nearly lost the ownership of the design. Be VERY careful in this venture.

If I were you I'd contact the lady who designed all those feet for her blind friend who wanted to sew. She could probably give you lots of advice. I can't remember her name or the name of those feet right now--there's one to sew strings of beads, I think one for piping, etc.. Maybe someone else remembers?

I have no idea, but best of luck to you. Every time I think of something that might be helpful to my quilting I find someone else has already thought of it and has it for sell. lol.
