I went shopping with my sweet husband today, looking for a few spools of thread and some fat quarters, and came home with two machines. One is a Janome 9700 (for me) the other is a Janome Style, for my granddaughter for Christmas.
Not only am I excited, but I'm a bit scared to even set mine up. I got both for half price. Heirs of a quilt shop owner who died recently are selling the merchandise----everything---for 50 percent off. They are only opening a few hours a day, two days a week for a short time. My question: Anyone have one of these and do you have advice about threads, needles, do's and don't's? I'm so excited about the embroidery functions.

I have a Janome 8100, sew & embroidery machine and I LOVE IT! In fact I have 3 Janome machines. I have found through many trials and tribulations that the metallic needles work with about any thread, and I use about any thread..lol Sometimes I will use a #9 needle for fine work, but for sometime I have just left the metallic needle in and works great. Another thing, practice makes perfect...do t-towels, lots of practice on them. Just have fun with it...congrats.

Thanks, Jean. I will try that. I was thinking about trying some monogrammed napkins first, but the tea towels are a good idea and if they turn out well, they could go to wrap Christmas goodies. I suspect I need to invest in some pretty embroidery threads. The same shop will be open Wednesday for a couple of hours and I'll have time to check out their threads then. I know she had Sulky and Mettler. By the way I have a couple more Janomes too---one I bought used about 10 years ago and the other two are Jems for taking to classes and bee. I never have problems with them.

Oh a hint - I'm sure dealers wouldn't agree, but a friend and I both use ANY thread to embroidery with. Just regular ol' sewing threads. No problems.

    Another thing, check out (http://metroemb.comMini%20Spool.html)
Their thread is really nice, I've used it for couple years, so has my friend. They have such gorgeous colors, quick on shipping, and you just can't beat their prices.

Ok, will go on that...have fun.

You got terrific deals. I don't have this machine but I do have a kenmore made by Janome. My experience and by what I've read here on this board is that Janome isn't picky about threads. I've used all kinds and never had an issue or had to use special needles. Good luck with it.
