Look at traditional Amish quilts. They are very graphic and simple to piece. I am referring to those like Amish Bars, Stars, Sunshine and Shadow, Nine Patch and Double Nine Patch.

I suggest that you ask them what patterns they consider busy. One person might say even the simpliest pattern but using multiple fabrics is busy. And another might consider a complex pattern of just a couple colors as NOT busy.

Even just a simple alternating blocks of white and another color or print, or alternating two different color fabrics, one solid and one print. (Or one color, using one plain and one print, one light and one dark.)

I liked Denyse Schmidt's quilts, especially in the Stone House in Rhode Island...however, a bit too contemporary for them....
Denyse's quilts sure give me some ideas..............

I would think any two color quilt would be not "busy."

When I get a couple of ideas that hit me, I will run those past them. As it is, that "Spider Web" design is the type of pattern they liked....lots of white. Perhaps I can modify the spider web to make it more manageabe. If I can find some nifty fabric.....hmmmm takes more thinking....

Check out this video by Ricky Tims: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Mu0C_QL8Y

It is a one seam flying geese technique that you might find easier.

Check Quilter's Cache - go through the patterns. I am working on a Pinwheel now and have made a lot of quilts with two and three colors. I think they are the most fun to work on. Edie

Look at this DWR that was made using primarily creams...the simplicity makes this so breathtakingly beautiful! Don't know if you're up for a DWR but at least this gives you an idea of how to make something not so "busy".

You have to scroll down to the second picture to see the one I'm talking about.

Good luck! Karen

That DWR is stunning! I never really cared for most DWRs but that one is just beautiful.
