I am new to quilting and just getting the courage to start cutting my material (which I have bought way too much of). My problem is that I do not know what type of thread to use. Please help....

A quilter never buys too much fabric.

As to threads, it depends on what you're doing.
I use Bottom Line in my bobbin. It's a poly thread, very thin so the bobbin lasts a long time.
Hand applique: silk or Bottom Line
Piecing for machine I use Aurifil (100%cotton) in the needle
Hand piecing I use Bottom Line.
http://www.superiorthreads.com carries Bottom Line and silk threads; also Masterpiece, a 100% cotton.
Aurifil is usually available at a quilt shop.
A lot of folks like Connecting Threads thread too.

I use white or cream basically, some use grey. Buy what you can afford. For piecing I do use Coats & Clark. Its a much better thread than what it used to be. Is it the best, absolutely not, does it work for me, absolutely. Just make sure you don't use machine quilting or hand quilting thread for your piecing and you'll be good to go.

I also use coats/clark for piecing. I haven't had any problems at all. I tend to use off white/white or medium to dark grey.

I use 100% cotton for piecing and Percencia for my quilt tops. It's made right here in Col., there is no lint. you can get it at threadle quilt shop (Harrietes) in lakewood.

I use a lot of Coats and Clark too... it is a little lintier but it doesn't cost me anything to clean my bobbin area a little more often. :D:D:D

Me too, get it on sale at joanns or with a coupon. the thread from "connecting threads" is pretty good too! no problems with it at all.
