I'm not an expert on sewing machine needles but maybe a smaller, sharper needle would help?
Another 'duh' moment. I don't know why I don't think of these things. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a go.

I was given advice by 3 80 year old ladies to use a sheet on the back of my first quilt. I hand quilted it just fine. Or so I thought...until I hand quilted my second one and discovered how much easier it was to needle when I had LQS fabric on the back!!
You have it; use it to machine quilt.
And if the sheets still smell, hang up a temp clothes line outside. It will be worth it.

A little soap & water plus vinegar, and the smoke/cigarette smell is gone. I'm still going to try a smaller needle to see if that gets rid of the large holes. I have sooo much, I hate the thought of not using it. I really like the thickness of it compared to the thin white stuff at JoAnn's.

Thanks for the advice.

I use always use sheets for backing, and have occassionally used sheets for blocks. I only machine quilt.
