Old Quilt needs new Binding

I have my grandmother's quilt. The binding is deteratering. I feel like I could put a new one on but do I need to remove the old first and then add new or can I just overlap them? thanks,

It's really up to you whether you remove the original binding or not. I think I would rather leave the original binding and just cover it with new.
