I loved the Hallmark movie (which my forgetter keeps me from remembering the title, sorry) in which slaves kept a history in embroidered quilt squares. It was so wonderful. I love those kinds, too.

I have a friend that is doing that now with her granddaughters. She is making blocks that depict HER the grandmother teaching the kids things like sweeping, reading, just daily LIFE stuff...then she embroideries them and the kids color them with crayons. They are really cool!

The underground railroad used quilts to show the way to next safe house. Elm creek quilting series did a book on it.

oooh...and that was later proven to be wrong... here is a good article on it http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...avequilts.html

and here is a list of the book about it http://www.womenfolk.com/historyofquilts/myth2.htm

Eleanor Burns wrote the Underground railroad quilt book, then came Barbara Brackman's facts and fabrications of the underground railroad.

As for the Elm creek books, I own everyone and have read them, and do PR for Jennifer and there has only been a fictional mention of the UGRR in the runaway quilt.
