Paper Piece question
Dear Fellow PP Quilters
My question is about cutting the pp 1/4 in dotted line around the paper pattern.
A fellow quilter cuts her pp pattern on the solid sewing line before placing the fabric pieces on the paper, then leaves the fabric paperless for the 1/4 inch seam allowance. This frees up ripping on the double fabric once the piece is sewn into a block. She is an excellent pp'er and leaves the rest of the paper in place until the entire quilt is put together. What are your thoughts? Thank you all. Donna

I cut on the solid line and fold over the fabric around it and tack it to the other fabric folded on the same paper piece. Then I whip stitch the pieces together never touching the paper. I keep the papers in until all sides are stitched and maybe until then adjacent piece is stitched to that. Then I remove the papers.

I trim the piece to the proper seam allowance, and then remove the paper before sewing together. i just can't get it to work if I've got two pieces of paper to deal with. I did the "50 stars" and tried several ways, and finally got to trimming the inner sides of each 8th, then removing all the paper and then sewing the eights into quarters, and then halves and then sewing the two halves together.
Like others have said, you need to find what works for you. I simply could not get my seams to line up easily with the paper still on - no matter how careful I was. I do baste each spot where it's important they line up, and then sew over the top when I've got them all as close to perfect as I want.
