My favorite Mariner's Compass pattern is the one by Brenda Henning of Bear Paw Productions:

Brenda also makes the Triangulations DVD, which is my go-to for making half square triangles. You print up the size you want on your printer, and away you go. Makes tons of accurate HST's very quickly (the usual methods are tedious).

The sheets, pinned to the fabric, make great leaders and enders, or work well for days you don't want to think, just sew! I put the completed HST's in a drawer till I have tons then I free design with them on the design wall. Also fab for making sawtooth borders.
