Your Quilt is adorable and I'm sure your Granddaughter will love it. Have you thought about adding eyelet dust ruffle and then using eyelet lightly ruffled with the outside border. That would give you more drop and your outside border wouldn't look too big.

If I was doing a piano key I would use all the colors that are in the quilt. Any leftover fabric that I used, and what a great way to use up my scraps! Your quilt is as cute as it can be! When I first looked at it I thought it was a panel! What a great job!

I think that people are missing the fact that this quilt will be on a bed, so the visual impact of the borders is quite different than when you see it laid out on a flat surface. I really like the coral fabric, and I see nothing wrong with having it on only 3 sides, but I think it would look nicer to have a narrow strip of it on top too. I think piano keys would be too busy. You want the center of the quilt to be the attraction, so the plain border will look fine, especially when the quilt is on a bed. And it is a charming quilt - you did a great job of adding to the size.

I just saw the later posting with the picture. If you are going to do the curved edge like in the picture, the large plain border is perfect!! Remember to use bias cut strips for curved or scalloped binding.

If it were mine, I would put a stronger color around the quilt than the coral. I don't think the coral does anything for your beautiful work. I would also put the border on all four sides in anticipation of the day when the quilt may be used just as a throw or folded across the bottom of the bed. The top border will fall over the top edge of the bed and not be seen.

Your quilt is stunning. I know it was a lot of work, but you did a fabulous job of expanding the design! I understand about fitting it to a specific mattress size. I had the same problem with a quilt for my grandson and had to add an extra wide border: Traveling Turtles Quilt. Once it is on the bed, the main focus will be on the top. I think either the peach or the red swirl would look great. What color is her room?
