"sew 2 strips (2"x6 1/2") together lengthwise. draw a diagonal line on a 3 1/2" square. place this square, rights sides together on the side of the first strip. sew on either side of the drawn diagonal line and cut on the line. press open the larger piece. repeat 120 times." " sew 4 pieces together to form the block."

i did this 30 times before noticing that when i pressed the piece to the side it was lower than the larger adjacant piece. about 1/4".....how am i to sew these together without cutting the finished piece to match the added triangle?
the diagram shows it matching in one straight line when pressed open, but it is not, and i am quite angry. i have tried pressing the seam in a different direction and pressing it open.
    .......is this clear as mud?

If you are using a purchased pattern, go to the website and check for corrections to the pattern. If I am going to purchase a pattern that is intricate, I check to see if there are corrections first. The pattern developers are getting better at posting corrections. Give us the name of pattern and creator, maybe we can help search

I'm not sure, but I think you should have sewn on the diagonal line as the 2 piece strip would be 3 1/2 x 6 1/2. I'm sure this is right now cause I just did it with colored paper.....I think if you want to use the pieces you have already sewn, you will have to cut the 2 piece part to the triangle size.....sorry....Good Luck!

sorry, but it's not a pattern error- it's a sewing error- many blocks are put together exactly this way- and many of us have had to deal with this little problem- it take (practice) i guess to get these right.
you need to really line up exactly- and stitch a (scant) 1/4" on each side of that line- if you are the least bit too much you will find them turn out just like yours did- what are you doing with the 1/2 square triangles you are cutting off? are they used later?--one fix is to stitch on the diagonal line - but if you need those smaller pieces later that technique will not work- you will have to find your (sweet spot)- this is one reason i never cut out all of the pieces for a quilt at once- i cut enough for a couple blocks and try it out- in case i need to cut something a tad larger to make something work.
if you have all of your pieces cut out-and your diagonals all drawn- adjust your seam line on each side of the diagonal to be a bit smaller- it will help- and press toward the corner-not toward the pieced block.
i hope that helps....it just takes some practice---slow down and check each block to make sure it's where you need it before you cut it- adjust until you have it right- everyone sews a little differently- and it takes finding the measurement that works for you.

I was going to agree with the last post I just got done with a quilt and I had to rip if i wasnt paying close attention. Finger press open before u cut to test each block to insure they are matching up. I hope that helps but just know many of us have been there!! Also, that line you draw has to be fussy from one corner to the other if its even 1/16 off your stitching line will be too...again I had to fix that on a couple to...mine was supposed to be kid friendly so my youngest monster was helping we both learned!!

thanks; i see now that i should have SEWN on the diagonal line. the pattern instructed to 'draw a diagonal line and sew 2 lines each side 3/8" away. cut on the drawn line........this will give me a triangle to use later, and a block for the pattern.

thanks for the reply. the line was drawn accurately with a ruler.
the sewing line is also accurate. it is the pattern's instructions that are incorrect. it will not work the way they have written it.

thanks for the response; you are correct. the pattern is in error, it was from a magazine and written by a popular scrap quilter.

I hate these types of blocks! No matter what I have done I can never find my 'sweet' spot.... I would rather cut the triangles and then stitch!
