The centre square is made as a ten minute block but make 5th square larger than others. Once you have done this press and find centres of each side this is middle of the twiddle bit.

Okay ladies without pattern had a go. 4 small squares 51/2 inches and one large square at 10 inches.
This made sure the points are further than 1/4 inch away from seam allowance.

The pattern is Parchment and Black Lacquer designed by Shelley Swanland. Finished size for the pattern is 48 x 48. I got this pattern at Road to CA Quilt Show.

Does anyone know why she used 4 small blocks as the foundation of the "star" rather than appliqueing the diamond/star onto one piece of fabric?

Thanks for the link. When I first looked at it I thought it was a variation of the 10 minute block.

Yes but it's kind of hard to explain without pictures. Have you ever seen a 10-minute block made? The raw edges of the center piece are sewn into the seams of the 4 small blocks. The center block then has edges with no wrong side, and it's on the bias. This allows you to fold over the center piece edges and sew them down, which gives the fabric the pretty curved diamond/star shape.

It's a concept similar to how cathedral window quilts are made, also. You're folding over the edge and stitching it down.

Thanks Peckish, I do remember the tute and how the center piece is sewn in, although I didn't see it when she showed the back of the block. I need to revisit the 10 min. block to figure out how it's done again.

These are made from an inserted piece of fabric whose loose edges are on the bias. The curves are made as you would with "cathedral windows". This is similar to the method used in the Alaska Toss Quilt.

You can purchase the download for this pattern from Craftys.com. I did last night.
