Thanks to everyone who responded. I have a lot of good information to consider.
As my first try, I plan on using "Printed Treasures" by Milliken that is inkjet printable fabric purchased from Jo-Ann Fabrics. I have a H-P printer and will use it according to the package directions: best quality printing using a plain paper setting.
The fabric is washable, but I don't think the quilts will be used so much that they will need to be washed often.
