Default piecing thread color

It just struck me today... I always reach for white thread when piecing, no matter the color of my fabric. I just never even thought about it. I alter the color of my quilting thread, but not the piecing. What do you do? Do you match the thread to fabric for piecing?

I do change my piecing thread to match the majority of my fabrics. If I am doing scrap quilt piecing I use beige or grey thread as it goes with most fabrics.

I just make sure I'm not using a very dark thread if I'm piecing something with lots of light background, and not using a very light thread if piecing something predominantly dark. Beige and grey work with just about everything.

I have 3 colors of thread for piecing -- charcoal grey for darks, light beige for piecing lights & white if I'm working only with pure white (which is pretty rare). The one I use the most by far is the beige. That's what I use if I'm mixing lights & darks or colors and whites.

I do match my thread if I am doing turned edge applique.

I have lots of tbread colors so usually match to fabric. If I don't happen to have matching thread then I usually reach for either a light or dark grey as a neutral.

It doesn't matter to me what color the piecing thread is but I don't use black thread for white fabric or vice versa. My favorite color is bright red thread. It looks pretty on my machine!

I am a grey girl all the way. I do applique with either matching thread or light/dark as needed.

I used to use white all the time...and still do with light fabrics...but I've found that it occasionally peaks through...especially when a quilt has been machine quilted (it is pulled so tight on the frame that sometimes the tread pulls enough that you can see it in the seams which is unappealing against darker fabrics)...now I mostly use a neutral like gray or beige though I will also color match to the primary color.
