I think you have a wonderful idea and it will be appreciated so much. Make a quilt that you are comfortable with the size that you make. Good luck to you

I think that is a great idea. Do you have anywhere else to look nearby? If not check Quilting Twins. The shipping is good & not very expensive. Pricing is very good per yard, great selection also with a large selection of panels.

Why not just make the quilt with fabrics that you find pretty?

I'm sure your neighbor will be touched by it and will never think it is missing the boating/garden fabrics. I doubt it will ever occur to him, and he'll surely love the quilt and the fact that you cared enough to make it.

hugs,
charlotte

What a wonderful idea, I'm sure it will bring him much comfort. I agree with others, use what colors you like and he will most certainly enjoy them. Look at JoAnn's for Blizzard fleece. It's heavier and warmer and you won't need batting. If you want it extra warm, you can put a layer of flannel inside the quilt. Be sure to shrink it first. So thoughtful of you to want to do this for him. I like your idea of making a pillowcase finish too. It will be lovely and loved.

If you want to make a lap quilt I would just pick some nice prints with masculine colors and go for it. As far as quilting, just do a few lines down the center to hold the layers together. He will love the quilt and appreciate your thoughtfulness.

I just looked at fabric.com and found several vegetable fabrics and several boat fabrics. They may not be what you are looking for....but they might be. This is such a good idea that I hate to see you give up on it.

Well, no luck at Joann's. They did have some garden themed fabrics but not enough that I liked, and the boating themed ones were juvenile-oriented. I had checked WM as well as they have a good selection and nice fabrics, but nothing that really matched my idea.

Maybe I'm not supposed to do this. Maybe flowers would be nice too.

I think you may be right about going with masculine colors that appeal to me. How do I know he would even like a vegetable garden or nautical quilt? Maybe those things will make him not as happy as I think. And just MAYbe that was why nothing fit - it wasn't the quilt I was supposed to make. I like the idea of fleece for a back as well. If I'm going to prewash the fleece, should I prewash all the fabrics? Do you think 2 yards total is enough for the top of a 4x5ish lap quilt?

So maybe some neutral colors - blues, whites, silvers, a bit of yellow (like a warm sunny day) or sand, greens, pops of color? (like a walk in the forest).

I love the idea! You might look to Spoonflower.com for custom, designed fabrics, or even go ahead and create your own.
