Default Placemats: Cotton batting or Flannel???

As I have posted before, my church is making at least 30 placemats for people who are on the program Meals on Wheels will receive as a holiday gift. My question is what is the best item to use inside the placemat?? I am working on finishing the other two made from this strip piecing. I have always used Hobbs 80/20. Have plenty of scraps to use up. Thanks for your advice.

The placemat is lovely. I just finished 4 Christmas ones on July 4th. I used cotton batting on these and on previous ones too. It's never too early to finish Christmas projects.

I always like to use pre washed flannel for my placemats. They are " quilty " but not so think the glasses tip over.

I've used Thermore which is very thin and polyester. The only shrinkage is in the fabrics.

Pellon fleece interfacing is my favorite for placemats and table runners.

I have used cotton batting because that is what I had and they were great. But I think flannel would be great too! I would pre-wash either first to get the shrinkage done before putting it in the placemats so the placemats will stay smoother and flatter when done.

I have used dream cotton request, which is thin, and I am pleased with that.

I like using Stiff Stuff by Lazy Girl Design for placemats. http://www.lazygirldesigns.com/sew-l...in-interfacing It gives them body, but they are still bendable and mine washed up nicely after putting them in the washer on gentle.

Whatever one uses - make sure that the placemats will still lay flat after they are washed.

Tippy glasses are bothersome!

Meals on Wheels placemats... What a great idea! Yours is very pretty and will be much appreciated. I'm with Leslie, I just love that Stiff Stuff!
