POLY-DBL KNIT- quilt top
can anyone recommend batting and backing for a vintage polyester/double knit grandmother's Flower garden quilt top? it was suggested to me to purchase a poly-cotton for back and to tie the quilt? I was thinking of taking it to my long-arm quilter--she has never worked with this and says anything goes for batting and backing. not sure I want to tie it but will if that is what should be done--the top is beautoiful and I would love to get it finished :-) thanks--Carole

the batting choice really determines how it should be finished- some batts are good for tied quilts- some are not- it would be difficult to hand quilt/stitch it with polyester fabrics. if your quilter is willing to work with it made from polyester fabrics. if she says go ahead with a backing of your choice & a batting- then go for it
i would probably get a cotton for backing- but a blend batt- like hobbs 80/20 and go ahead & have it long-arm quilted.

I suggest a thin batting as the poly is heavy you might also consider a blend bed sheet for the backing.
However, talk with the quilter again as some fabrics may be more difficult to machine quilt.
I have seen may made in the 70's that were hand quilted but difficult. It will wear forever and then some.

I have an old double-knit quilt my Mother made. She used a sheet for backing and an old very lightweight blanket for batting. It's tied, not quilted. Pretty heavy and warm. Can't tell you how many times it's been in the washer and still looks as good as the day she gave it to me.
