For me, who is still a beginner and still needs lots of practice, I can do a sort of acceptable meander, and it works best when I reach that "sweet spot" combination of speed of machine and rate at which my hands move the quilt. I can't always get there, but I know it when I do. My machine doesn't drop feed dogs so I just set stitch length to 0. Used to cover the thing with a slippery slider but one day forgot and it was just as good.

I usually just fmq with long meandering lines. Stippling doesn't go well for me. Also, the faster you can go, the better the stitches look. Wearing gloves helps alot.

I'm not good at FMQ either so I do my practicing on making small items that can be used. If it doesn't look great...oh well...This way you can also see your improvement on your small projects. Good luck and just have fun!
