I have quilted many quilts without using a walking foot. Just be sure it is basted well. I didn't get puckers or pleats in my backing.

I have several feet that go with my machine, but mainly use the 1/4" foot, regular foot and the walking foot when I'm doing the binding and/or stitch in the ditch, and the open toe foot for when I'm FM. Your backing will be smoother if you use either the walking foot for stitch in the ditch or outlining, or the open toe for FM.

I did my first two quilts with my regular foot. They are not perfectly quilting, but then again, they are not perfectly pieced either. I didn't want to invest too much until I saw if quilting would keep my attention.

Go ahead and quilt with your regular foot until you decide a walking foot is worth the investment to you. You certainly don't need all the gadgets to enjoy the hobby.
