Primitive Quilts and Projects is my favorite magazine, that one and the WoolStreet Journal are then only ones I still subscribe to ( in print) I do subscribe to a couple on line, downloadable ones - the Quilt Pattern Magazine and Craftposium Magazine. I think ( primatives are still popular but like many things depends on location. Different areas tend to support different trends

I know I have the initial thought as you--but then I think, I like modern, but I still love traditional and I love art quilts. It may be that they are just talked about more because modern quilts are new.

There is also an on- going pattern club called Kindred Spirits designed by Jill Shaulis and Vicki Olsen which features primitive style.

I am drawn to the primitive look. I love the color palettes, the designs and the overall "sense of serenity" they give me. I am not really a modern fan, but can see how they appeal to others. I've never been much of a trend setter!!

Good analysis, but I think there is at least one other factor. Many of the modern quilt patterns are relatively simple to make and still look quite striking. With everyone working, people may not have the time to spend on the more complex quilts.

Now, I'm sure someone will say that modern quilts can be just as difficult and time consuming as any other type of quilt. And you are right!

Me, too! I figured out early in my learning to quilt process that working with fabrics or patterns that I didn't like meant that the quilt would not get done.

I love country/prim style quilts. I have 3 country/prim shops in my area . Two are doing well but the third has brought in some more modern style fabrics. She has added a little more over time. Wool is also big in this area. I keep saying I want to try something different but I can't do it.

Just as the fabrics and patterns of the past, I hope hand quilting comes back. Not to say that some of the machine quilting I've seen isn't lovely and a work of art, we are losing the art of hand quilting as those who grew up with that are leaving us. So much of today's trend is to the quick and easy. Frankly, I'm rather offended to see machine quilted quilts taking prizes at the quilt shows and the hand quilted ones are overlooked. I vividly recall a show where there was a fantastic whole cloth hand quilted one that received nothing while the machine quilted ones took the awards. I understand time constraints of today's women but we are losing a part of history and respect for the time and talent put into hand quilting.

I think you are right on with this. I always have had this "all or nothing" attitude but very - of the moment. When I'm into traditional I'm IN TO TRADITIONAL with a passion! But the same goes for art quilting and modern when I'm in that groove...I love it all!

This is very very true. Really glad you brought that up! I think this has been the trend of the last twenty five years - quick and easy...and that's understandable.
