When is her birthday? Or anniversary? Just HOW close a friend is she? If close, buy another one while it's still available, gift wrap it and give it as a present. Otherwise, I'd say do it at home.

Interesting quandry here-I was criticized for sharing a pattern out of an old magazine with a board member, but it seams I would be perfectly ok to just send her the magazine.
Also, many people here sell old patterns (used or not) and that seems ok. At the guild meeting I attended, there was a "share" table with many books, patterns, etc. Free patterns are available all over the internet-I could go on and on! No wonder people are confused!!

There are times when I make acrylic templates for the quilt pattern I am doing. I can't help but wonder if there are issues with that. They are for my own personal use, don't like using paper or even the heavy plastic, I like the acrylic so that I don't cut them up and they are more accurate.

The designers make peanuts on the patterns, less than 50% of the cost. They have put a lot of their time & knowledge into producing a pattern, & earn every penny. I believe that patterns,, unless free,, should not be shared, books either.

Please don't share the pattern. I am surprised that she would ask given that she works at the LQS that sells this designers pattern.

I doubt that the LQS owner would appreciate one of their employees violating copyright law.

All of the LQS's in my area are very mindful of copyright law. Whenever a class is given that uses a pattern or book, each class member must purchase their own copy.

If your friend actually "works" at a quilt shop, she is very well aware of copyright laws. At my LQS every employee is aware of these laws. We have to show we purchased a pattern during any classes we take. Even if we make copies to write or scribble notes on, the instructor will come around to see if we have the original. Any LQS runs the risk of huge penalties if caught if they don't abide by those laws. Let your friend know that you are concerned and don't wish for her or the shop to get into any trouble so you won't "share" your pattern.

That's actually a different copyright law (falls under "distribution" because it's a classrom). It's kind of like buying a movie on DVD then showing it on a projector and charging people to watch it. If you've ever watched a DVD you've seen the FBI warning. Same thing.

Plus of course the store wants to sell more patterns. But the sales are a secondary reason to infringing on a distribution of copywritten material.

The topic is how should this member may handle the situation, not the issue of copyrights. It puts the askee in an uncomfortable situation and that can be very stressful to many people. We can all offer our opinions and maybe make her feel better. :thumbup:

I know..... Some people just have to be told straight up, in the nicest way you can......That is about all you can do, if the buyer is not comfortable then just say so, if the asker does not understand it is on her concious.
