100+ tissue covers later...............
I've not counted the tissue covers yet-----------but I bet I'm getting close to 100. I keep finding more bits of fabric--------today did some Christmas, a couple Valentines, a couple flags.
AND THEN found the zip lock bag where I had started some very simple gift baggies a couple years ago. I've got to get back to the quilt for a gal at church-----------she lost a leg in a motorcycle accident and I'm making a personal sized quilt for her. 80% done. |
I have seen a few diff. patterns for the small purse tissue covers, which one are you using?
|
I'm going to a bazaar but haven't taken tissue covers. How much can you sell them for? No competetion to you, I'm on the West coast :) :) :)

I did the easy tissue holder from QB last year for a craft show last year and sold about 15 at $1.50 ea. This year I will be doing the ones from the little shirt pattern. They are so cute but they will be more money so I will see how many I sell.

$1.50 seems quite reasonable for the easy ones! |
Depends where you are. I think that $1.50 is away too low for anywhere these days. Don't undervalue your work. It takes time to cut, press, sew.
|
Little shirt pattern????? Sounds interesting...is it a pattern you bought? if so where...is it hard or really time consuming to make. I do craft sales in fall and this might be of interest.
|
|
The little shirt pattern was from the magazine Quilts and More Magazine a while back. Segasal did the original post under "cute little shirts" I think. The first shirt took about an hour to make but I can do them in about 15 minutes now. A do the tissue holders as a way to get people to look at my stuff hoping they will buy other things too. Craft Shows have been slow here.

Thanks. This is the pattern and tutorial I used. Very easy!

I find this so interesting, because I have never in all my life ever bought those little packs of tissues. I just grab a stack and stick them in the corner of my purse, or in my pocket. So I question who actually buys them? I have thought of making some too, but I don't know anyone around here that would even use one.

I may have to try making some then. Thanks.
|
I have made some of these but am having trouble finding tissues that open from the front and not the top, which brand do you use. Thanks
|
I make those too, put tissue in them and sell them for $3.00. I think this is reasonable.

Don't ask me about money, most of my stuff is given away! I have seen them on the net for $4-5 which is way too high in my opinion. Some gals said they were charging $2 which seems logical. I'm taking some to my club and will sell them for $1.25 with the quarter going to the club. THE FABRIC IS ALL SCRAP! I don't intend to get rich, but I am saving up for a lap-top so the cash will help. AND, I've got a couple chance auctions to donate to, as well as I've given some to family and friends so far.
|
I agree. I used them all the time. Get them in bulk at Costco and use them in my purse. Keeps my tissues from getting all frayed. I am going to try this pattern. Thanks for posting it!
|
Most of the tissues that I have seen open in the front. I don't think I have seen those that open from the top. Kleenex, costco, Wal-Mart, Target all have tissues that open in the middle.

I've used this one too! Really like it...it takes me longer to pick out the fabric than it does to make them.
I pulled out a scrap bag, cut the linings from solids or nondescript prints. Then I cut out outsides from pretty prints-------------then I sorted, for the first 50 or so. After that I did some holiday stuff that needed red or white: Christmas, Valentines day, patriotic. I did manage to make a very few masculine covers. SOMEWHERE in this house is a huge bag of pants legs, denim, khaki, black, navy, some far out prints that I had left over from doing a few dozen shopping bags. I NEED THEM NOW. But I can't find them. I can't image that I got rid of them. I like a bit heavier lining since some of my prints were rather light weight. |

I sell these at a local small shop and sell them for $3. I include a package of tissue inside it as well.....very convenient for the purchaser. I buy the 10-12 pack of tissues at Walmart or Target for minimal cost so well worth the llittle extra effort. Never sold them at craft shows though....did other items.

Everyone I know uses the tissues------------except me! I'm going to have to change and start using them now that I have all the neat covers. |
I just came from a quilt show that had them for sale @ $3.00 each :)
|
I've sold them for $2 at the one craft show I do every year. Time to make some more, this year's show is coming up in a few weeks. Packs of tissues can be found for around $2 for 10 packs, scrap fabric, a few minutes, you're all set.

Thank you, now I know what I will make for the kids teachers this year for Christmas. Our budget is stretched and this would be a useful gift.
I may make some in the school colours for the school store to sell. A larger version could be used to cover bum wipe packages. A smaller one with the opening near the top could be used for business cards. |

Well, I liked this tute so much, and the idea of it, that I went into my sewing room and whipped some out this afternoon, they look small, but I'll get some tissue packages tomorrow and make sure they fit nicely before I continue this fun little project. Thanks.
|
When I made a comment that $1.50 is way too low of a price for the tissue covers I thought that the price was low. Today at the Old Country Store in Intercourse, PA I saw them for $0.99. They were made just about the same but I am not sure if they had contrasting fabric. I was wrong! I admit.

After I read this I went to my scraps and cut out - maybe 30? - and finished 11. Thanks so much for the tip. I plan to make several bags for gifts and now they'll include the tissue holder. The rest I may try to sell. It took me a bit over an hour to complete 11 with another 11 made through the first sewing step (before you fold them to the center). This did not include cutting, but still less than 10 minutes each. If I sold them for 99 cents each I'd be making about $10 an hour. That's not enough for me. I'll put them in our workroom for $3 each - with tissue. If they don't sell I'll give them as gifts - great stocking stuffers!

Thank you for the link and also for price information. I think my granddaughter could make these and sell them herself.
|
This is a great project for a beginning sewer. The tricky part is bringing the finished edges into the middle. I lay a small ruler on my ironing board and folder over 1 1/2". You could also fold and press and fold to the press line. Good luck. These are fun!
Oh - the other tricky part is remembering to change feet when you go to straight to zigzag stitches! Had that issue on the first one. After that I chain sewed them and it was much easier. Did have my "Purple Thang" to push the fabric under the foot at the center. |

Love the fabrics. Most of mine aren't eye catching---------but still decent. |

Never thought about pinning them - just held on and sew, sew, sewed! :)

I have made these too and I just use tissues from my box. I have boxes all over the house. It doesn't take long to grab about 5-8 and fold each one, (we can all fold fabric...so tissues are easy) and then stack them up and put them in the tissue holder. I don't always have those little packets around but I always have big boxes of tissues. Just an idea for all of you. And I bet one large box would be less expensive than several little packets. Just sayin'! :-)
