100+ years old......

Ladies,
A very good friend of mine just gave me a quilt that her grandmother made. It was made in the early 1900's. There looks to be NO wear on this quilt at all. There are 20 floral squares and the back of the quilt is white. I am so honored that she gave it to me. She said no one in her family would want it. Can you tell me the name of the pattern? Thanks! |
It is beautiful. Love the old fabrics. Beautifully quilted.
According to Brackman, it is called Friendship Dahlia. There was a similar pattern, unnamed published in 1847 (no stem, more petals). This is a lovely quilt. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for the name of it! Are the fabrics from their clothing? I don't know what the green and white would be from. All of the green matches and all of the white matches.
it's a beautiful quilt
I presume those would have been purchased but the petals are scraps from clothing. As I understand it, that was the usual way.

Awww.....thank you!
So, she would of been making clothing and the petals are from her left over clothing scraps! Gee, it's a scrappy quilt! |

thanks for sharing, this is a beautiful quilt.

Lovely quilt - too bad nobody wanted it! It is well-done and some grandmother put a lot of love and time into that quilt. You are lucky to have it.!
Awesome!!!

The quilt is lovely but I don't think that it is quite as old as the early 1900's. That shade of green was popular in the 1930's but the ginghams and the fuschia, black, white print in one of the squares says 1960's to me. Often scraps and even yardage was saved for many years before a quilt was made. A quilt appraiser could date this for you more accurately and give you an idea of its value. It's really pretty and a wonderful gift.

I have no idea if the quilt is as old as the former owner thinks, but, please don't tell her it might not be as old as she believes. There would be no point to it. It is a gift that should be treasured, no matter what. Beautiful quilt. I would think anyone would be honored to have it.

It is very beautiful...you are very lucky.
That is in amazing shape! And that hand quilting is soooo beautiful. You were given a real treasure. How wonderful.
I have a quilt that has the same flower on a yellow background. Mine is old too but not quite as good of shape as yours. What a nice thing for her to give it to you!
How wonderful that this lovely quilt found a home with someone who appreciates it!

I am glad to see that this lovely quilt has gone to a loving home. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I totally agree not saying anything about the age. I agree with the new age. I didn't think about the green in it. It does scream 30's to me too.
The age really doesn't matter to me. It is the gift of a family treasure to me who isn't a real family member to her. Thanks ladies |
Yes, fabric was limited but solid colors were available as yardage.
Just read my first novel by Jennifer Cheverrini sp? "A Quilter's Legacy." Your heirloom quilt sure made me think of that story. Treasure that well made quilt!
It's very pretty...glad you can save it.
A beautiful treasure and a great scrappy quilt. Wouldn't be that hard to make - a lot of cutting curved pieces though.
I believe that green was known as 'poison green'. The print fabrics look to be from the 20's so yeah the quilt is closer to 100 then not even if it was made in the 30's or 40's. Beautiful treasure
beautiful!!! Wouldn't you love to hear the stories if those pieces of fabric could talk!!!
This is beautiful. I can't believe no one wanted it and aren't you the fortunate one. Good thing because you already appreciate it. She knew it would be in good hands with you.
Such beautiful quilting! Thanks for bringing us this treasure...
Poison green was a popular color then as was bubble gum pink! This might be too bright, pg is usually a bit muddier, but whatever, it is a treasure from the past..and some of those petals could be from feed sacks. It is beautiful--- make sure you get names and dates as best as you can for the historical record of it, and also get it appraised....best gift ever!
its amazing how some people dont appreciate quilts. too bad for them. Great gift to you.
Questioning the date reminds us of the need to label and document our quilts. New owners will play guessing games enough about the background of a quilt. At least with a date and other vital information, they have some accurate information on which to build their theories.
What a treasure! I hope that my family will want my quilts, but it is doubtful.
That is beautiful and in amazing shape for 100+ years. What a treasure.
I have one my mom made and she buttonholed stitched around the petals...I love it.. yours is so pretty...
Lucky you and the quilting is very nic e.

Thanks much ladies! I sent an email to my friend to let her know I received it. So she got that yesterday. Today I sat down and wrote her a note sharing the information you have given me. I told her the name of the pattern and that the fabrics were probably scraps from clothing her grandmother made.
I'm not sure where to put it in my home. I'd love to hang it, but I don't have wall space. I may put it over our railing. It would hang down so we would be able to see it from the main floor. Thanks again! |
Fabulous quilt for sure! But I don't think that it is 100 years old. I don't think that they made gingham 100 years ago. Some of the petals look like feed sack fabric. DH said they made the printed feedsacks when he was a lad - in the 40's. HTH
Poison green was more from the turn of the century. The green in the quilt is very typical of depression era quilts.
I used to run into this "it must be 100 years old" sometimes when I was buying and selling antique quilts. I quickly learned, do not try to tell someone something they don't want to know. Just smile and nod your head... |

I'm open to know how old you feel the quilt is.
So....thoughts? |
