1600 quilt/ same as jelly roll race quilt/Help
 

I do not under stand how I got what I did? My strips are all sew together and and the flimsy is 32 strips wide and way to long.
I went along just sewing together and when I sewed the last two together I had a tube so I took those apart. Am I crazy or what the @&%$*? am I doing wrong? Can anyone tell me so my head clears up?

I think the last step is to fold your strip set in half lengthwise, sew along one side and cut at the fold.

How long is "way too long?" If you sew your strip set lengthwise one more time, it will be approx 64-65" wide/long after cutting on the fold.

I do think I have to cut in half length wise and then I will have two quilts. I still don't get it because if I sew it on one side lengthwise and cut on the fold i would think it would make it worse. Thanks for trying to help me with this monster.

Well, I just measured and if I cur it in half length wise I will have two quilts that measure 59 wide x 64 long without boarders. I did not use a jelly roll and I used about 60 or so strips. Some were smaller that 22 inches and some were WOF. I though I would make a bigger quilt but I don't thing it works that way. I do think Elizabeth is correct in her answer if I had use a jelly roll or 40 to 42 strips of WOF. I don't know why the simplest things I get caught up on. I did watch some vides and the strips run horizontal and I was looking at them vertical. Thanks to Liz for the help.

Can you post a pic of where you're at? I'm scared to give you advice because I don't understand what stage you're at, or what you've done wrong (not saying you HAVE done something wrong, but just in case....)

The way this quilt works is that you start out with a strip that's about 1600 inches long and (finished) 2 inches wide. As you work, you are halving one dimension and doubling the other, so the dimensions go from 2x1600 to 4x800 to 8x400 to 16x200 to 32x100 to 64x50. When you start out with a longer (or shorter) strip, your first dimension (2,4,8,16,32,64) will change in the same way, but the second dimension will be bigger (or smaller), depending on the length of your original strip. It sounds like you were lucky in that you will be able to make two nice sized quilts. That must have been one really long starting strip!

Yep, that sounds about right. I don't think you did anything wrong. I have made several jelly roll races. They do at some point get longer than I want and narrower than I want. That's when I have gone one step further than I should have. Now what I do, when it gets to a suitable width. I stop. Then I add strips (extra ones) to the top and the bottom a row at a time till I get the length I want. As long as the same color strip is added to each side, it isn't noticeable that strips have been added and it all blends in.

Oh Dunster and Toverly, Thanks so much for your help. I can add strips if I like to top or bottom. Some one told me there was a site on computer that gives measurements for all the different sizes of the jelly roll race quilt. I will see if I can find that.
