These are the first two totes I made for a resort's gift shop in Vanuatu-they wanted beachy themed fabrics-so I have been buying some on my shop hop and at Joann's. The larger one I made from the original pattern (smaller one), but I enlarged it and added a tab closing. Just realized I have the smaller bag turned around showing the back!! Oh well, it has the horizontal stripe across the front like in the larger one

Sorry the first one is a bit blurry-the pattern is Tahoe Tote by Pink Sand Beach Designs. I plan to make it several times, with different beachy fabrics I have. The owners of this resort are friends of ours in Vanuatu and she has purchased 4 purses from me already. They want totes instead of purses for their gift shop. I am going back in April so will take them with me. In the meantime, I send them photos as I make them.

alikat110 03-08-2012 12:39 PM

Very pretty, love the flip flop bag.

noahscats7 03-08-2012 05:21 PM

ging10ging 03-08-2012 05:26 PM

I like them both but I like the flip flops their cute. Sue

jem39 03-08-2012 05:26 PM

They're really nice. What kind of stabilizer do you put inside to make them stand up?

No, had just gotten that fabric a few days before I knew I was doing the shop hop. I only got a yard of the flip flop fabric, which is enough for about 2 different totes, but as cute as it is, I might go back and get more. It was just at Joann's, so I am sure I can get more.

sewbeadit 03-08-2012 05:32 PM

They are both darling and very beachy! Excellent job sewing too.

I just paid a gal $169 to make me a large purse. It's really a diaper bag (it's that big). I love it and she is known all over town for her purses. I'm using it next weekend when I go to the Oregon coast. I'm using it for my bathroom stuff...blowdryer, makeup, shampoo, etc. I have a hard time making purses. I get suckered into buying the pattern and fabric because it's so dang cute, but after I do a hatchet job on it, I throw it in my closet. I've even taken 3 classes on purses and can't do them. So yours are wonderful!!! Great job!!!!!

Thanks! Wow, $169.00!! I made one that is #1187 Sweet Retreat Weekend Bag by Whistlepig Creek Productions-it is 22" x 15" x 8"- and it was ALLOT of work, but turned out nice. I was thinking of $45.00, but I might re-think that-it has roughly 4 yards of fabric total and 2 yards of fusible fleece, so maybe I might go $65.00. I posted a pic of it a while back with some other bags I made. Thanks for the info!

SittingPretty 03-08-2012 06:28 PM

They are both SO CUTE! Love the little fishy inside the fish one.

Thanks, though I have to admit that little fishy was put there to cover up the two little holes I put in the lining when I put the magnetic closure on the wrong side!! I usually add them to the inside, one on each side, but this bag I wanted the tab closure, so I did 1/2 the magnet on the tab the right way, but wasn't thinking when I put the other side in. It should have gone on the outside to meet up with the tab, but I did it wrong-so had to think of a way to conceal it. I just cut out a fish from a scrap of the fabric and tried to fuse it-but it didn't stick well, so I used fabric glue and that did the trick! Looks like it was meant to be there, huh?? SHHH--don't tell!!

sewnsewer2 03-08-2012 07:09 PM

Great job! Bet they sell fast.

bigdogmom 03-08-2012 07:40 PM

Those look great, they are sure to sell fast!

Grandma Peg 03-08-2012 07:48 PM

Very cute and love the fabrics!

Blue's quilting mama 03-08-2012 08:58 PM

Jill, I was wondering if you have gone to see Frankie at the floral shop there in Ramona? You never know, she might be able to sell your bags locally. You do such beautiful work on them.

Monroe 03-08-2012 09:03 PM

Love the bags! What stabilizer do you use to give the nice sturdiness to your bags?

Haven't met her yet, but DH was in and bought me roses for Valentine's day and he said a man helped him. Thanks for the idea-I might pop in to check it out!

Those two I used fusible fleece (987) on both the outside and lining fabrics, which seemed to work. They aren't stiff, but still have soft body. Normally, I just use 987 on the outside, and nothing on the lining-except light weight fusible on the pockets inside.

tezell0801 03-09-2012 09:40 AM

I love them, I would love to try to make a tote one day.

Jill, I just bought the pattern for the Tahoe Tote yesterday! I really thought it had a zipper up top....i don't think I see one in yours...did you leave it out? just wondering. The bags are beautiful! I am so very tired of my old tote pattern so I just bought this pattern on a whim and was so excited to see someone else had already made it! Thanks for posting your pics.

Steady Stiching 03-10-2012 04:58 AM

Your attention to detail (twin needle on top rim and handle and heirloom stitch on the other seams) really takes this bag from being cute to being extremely well made...a lesson that every needs to learn how to use their edge joiner foot. Well done!

Scakes 03-10-2012 05:03 AM

You did a beautiful job.

maureenq 03-10-2012 05:09 AM

your work is very professional. Thanks for showing us the inside, with the pockets and the magnet closure. Your handles look sturdy.

ellenmg 03-10-2012 05:11 AM

What do you use for the bottom by way of stabilizer? Your bags are adorable!

2manyhobbies 03-10-2012 05:35 AM

Beautiful. I like the bright interiors. I can't find anything in purses lined in black!

stitchinwitch 03-10-2012 05:45 AM

Those are so cute! Will those be sold in the restaurant? When are you going back? What stiffiner did you use to make the purses so perky and smooth? Thanks for sharing.

marymay 03-10-2012 05:53 AM

How much do you sale these for. Wonderful bags

callen 03-10-2012 06:19 AM

Super cute!!! Wish I was at the beach instead of looking at 5 feet of snow.

craftymatt2 03-10-2012 07:24 AM

WOW, those are gorgeous, i love the shark one and there's a lone shark on the inside, such a cute added surprise, you do such a fanstastic job. But can i ask where is Vanuatu?? Geography wasn't my strong suit. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous bags.

hperttula123 03-10-2012 07:31 AM

Love your purses. They should sell very quick. You did a wonderful job on them. :)

Vanuatu is in the Pacific ocean-east of Brisbane, Australia, a bit west of Fiji-closer to Fiji, though, and north of New Zealand. So, to make it simple, look at a map of the Pacific, we are between Australia and Fiji. It is a long chain of "dots" on the map! We are on Efate, in the capitol of Port Vila. Thanks for the compliments on the totes!
