I do this method all the time with a slight difference... I don't have that fancy ruler so I just use my regular cutting ruler but I do part of the cutting of the strips BEFORE I sew the seam. After the seam is sewn, you only need to cut a few inches with the scissors.

Let's do some math.

There are 612 square inches in an 18" x 34" piece of fabric. !

If you made your binding 2 1/2' which is common, you'd get 252 running inches of binding or 7 yards of binding.

Someone is changing words. 252 INCHES of 2 1/2 binding can never be more than 612 square inches.

And what is the mystery?
Take your 34" piece of fabric, cut a strip of 2 1/2 inches then repeat, then repeat, then repeat--------------------which is exactly what every one of us does every day

Funny isn't it?

200 yards would be a miracle! Can't be done. At least not by us. The Big Guy would have to make that cut for us!

feffertim 09-16-2011 08:36 AM

thank you for this. Please ignore the stupid comment about yards vs inches. It's an easy mistake to make and quite beside the point. It's a great and useful video and who cares about your typo. Some people just like to nit pick.

I love the MSQC video's! Thank you for reminding me!

You are right! This is a GREAT find  Thanks for sharing. I certainly needed the visual. I have tried to follow instructions sort of like that in my quilting manual and never did get it. Now I get it!

I'm not getting this thinking (I'm no math person!) But if you cut all of those strips, you'll have to be seaming each end to end. In the video it is a continuous cut. Are am I not understanding what you are saying. Sorry

I have that little gizmo and love it. It was some of the best money I've ever spent on quilting notions.

Where can I get that little gizmo?

I guess there are a lot of people who don't read from the beginning. If they would have they would have seen right off the bat that she made a typing error whick everyone does. so let's move on a not carry on over the mistake. I have made many errors when I am typing and I think I caught them all and whoops missed one. She gave us a great link to a site that we can all I am sure learn from. Where is all the love we have on this board?

Great video. The speakers on my computer are not working. Can anyone tell me why you have to have her tool?

You don't really "have to" have it - any ruler would work. The one she is using is long and is only 2 1/2" wide which is the width of binding she's cutting. I personally like to cut my bindings at 2 1/4" anyways.

CoolJulUtah 09-17-2011 12:19 AM

This is GREAT!!! I've gotta check out all of their videos now to see what else I can learn!!! :o)

More the question ... why do we need any of the tools/rulers/trinkets etc. that we buy? ...

Most times, it's nothing new that our ancestors didn't do, but did in a different and usually much more laborious fashion. So no, we do not NEED them!

Sometimes it makes the job easier. The convenience.
And oft times ... just a good marketing technique to make us believe "pixe dust" is going to come along and make our quilting not only easier, but MUCH better!

Go to the first page of this tute and you will see the direct line in blue to go to the web page. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the link. I finally see how to do the bias binding, couldn't quite get the hang of it before. Thanks again.

Pam H 09-17-2011 05:20 PM

This is so cool. Plus I just bought that ruler last week. Now I will have to try it out!

bjdemir 09-17-2011 08:13 PM

Should be 200 inches not yards. But a good tutorial anyway.

bbeyes 09-18-2011 01:03 PM

Never saw that done before I'm really impressed. Can hardly wait to use that method.

susanwilley 09-18-2011 02:06 PM

I learned this method from one of the Dummie books...."Quilting for Dummies", I just love the Dummie books. They call it the tube method. It works great and I use it all the time.

lollygagging 09-22-2011 05:02 PM

Boy, that sure is a time saver. I'd have to calculate which method will yield the most binding. I rarely used biased binding. Although I do use a 2 1/2" strip and double it for my binding, I don't have the waste like I would from using bias strips. I wonder if that could be done with straight of grain cuts. One seam, many cuts....that would be great!

bbeyes 10-07-2011 05:04 PM

Thank you so much its the one I was looking for. You guys are so great.

bbeyes 10-07-2011 05:05 PM

Thanks for taking the time to find it for me. Really greatful. Trying to finish this before Tues. when my daughter comes to visit.
