Make a Sylvia's Bridal Quilt from Elm Creek Quilts book of same title. And HAVE FUN!

purplemem 12-28-2009 12:18 AM

Not buy ANY FABRIC that is not "gift money". I want to see if I can go the whole year with buying no fabric out of my budget. I'm not sure if that makes sense to you, but sometimes all of my "extra" money goes to fabric. I have enough fabric "put by" to make no less than 30 children's quilts and 10 queen size quilts. I gave myself the "gift money" exception because both my dh and my son gift me "fabric money" for my birthday.

mosher92 12-28-2009 02:14 AM

I shall try to readopt my old new years resolution.

FINISH 2 PROJECT BEFORE I START ANY NEW ONES.

Even if I am able to stick with this I am not sure I will have all my UFO's finished in a year. :)

patricej 12-28-2009 02:37 AM

This year, I'm determined to improve my machine quilting skills.

Freemotion may have to wait until 2011, but I'm tired of making tops I'm proud of only to end up with a quilt I'd rather bury after I've smooshed it all out of shape during the quilting phase.

ckcowl 12-28-2009 04:48 AM

my goals for the new year are:
1) ORGANIZATION!!! if i have to spend 1/2 of my sewing time pawing through boxes to find what i need i will never get anything done.

2) finish old before i start new...bad habit i have; when a project is 'almost-done' i tend to put it aside and start a new one...so, i have stacks of (almost done...another hour and it would be outta here) gonna remedy this...i hope

3) pick 2 charities for the year and concentrate on their needs instead of trying to 'do it all' and accomplish nothing.

4)now that my work schedule is ... (scheduled) better time management should be easier to pull off. (more sewing time, less time sitting in front of the computer...bumber dude)

5)try to make at least one (small item) a week, aside from the large quilts ... like a set of place mats, table runner, ect.

6) teach at least one class a quarter, and take one class...learn something new...

7) only spend $$ on backing and batting when at all possible, use up stash, which means more scrap quilts this year...

8) enter at least 2 shows/contests

9) keep up with swaps/challenges and forum activities

10) ENJOY THE PROCESS THROUGH THE YEAR!!!

Mamagus 12-28-2009 05:03 AM

1. For every quilt I make to sell, I want to make one to give away or keep.

2. Try and find a source for backing fabric and batting where I can buy in bulk!

QuiltingGrannie 12-28-2009 05:17 AM

#1 Reorganize my sewing room.
#2 Make the Christmas star quilt as a wall hanging,
#3 a twin quilt for my grandson,
#4 a queen quilt for my girlfriend (which I will also design),
#5 a queen quilt for DH and I (which I also will design),
#6 a twin quilt for my granddaughter.
And learn, learn, learn, more, more, more.

janRN 12-28-2009 05:55 AM

I'm with Loretta: learn to applique and paper piece. I'd like to take a class but I'm the least social person in the world so I'll probably learn from a book or video.

lfw045 12-28-2009 06:02 AM

Budget my time here and spend more time making quilts. There is a small nursing home here run by the Union Mission that has 10 residents. Nine ladies and 1 gentleman that I want to make twin size tied quilts for. Anyone want to help or contribute? :^)

lots2do 12-28-2009 07:17 AM

I am going to adopt a dom. violence shelter here. I'm going to start by making book bags and filling them with fun stuff for the children.
I also want to give myself permission to create more. It soothes my soul.

luvstoquilt301 12-28-2009 07:22 AM

Continue making quilts for Quilts of Valor and our local Hospice.

Make one quilt good enough for a small local show and our county fair.

Make a heirloom baby quilt for the family where I am a nanny. They are having a baby girl in early March.

Use up some orphan blocks for pieced backings like Bonnie Hunter.

Blockhead 12-28-2009 01:15 PM

In Heirloom Machine Quilting, Harriet Hargrave says ..."if you put 10 mins a day into focused practice for six months you will become a good quilter......"

I am going to practice FMQ for min 10 mins per day.

Actually I am going to give a minimum of one hour per day to some sort of quilting activity (I don't want to be a beginner forever)!

These activities could include any sort of cutting, sewing, designing, reading, learning and orgainising. Fabric shopping, reading magazines or forums don't count!!!

Also keeping my blog up to date.

HollyJill 12-28-2009 07:17 PM

Just "DO!!!"

Bottle Blonde 12-28-2009 10:04 PM

My resolution is to make 1 project entirely by hand. Cut the fabric with scissors - hand piece - hand quilt.

Then I need to learn how to free motion quilt.

I also want to make an art quilt of my own design using watercolor pencils or fabric paint.

The more I think about this, the longer the list gets....I better stop thinking now. lol.

Iluv2quilt 12-29-2009 04:53 AM

1. I want to quilt my 5 kids' quilt tops that have been ready for a year. I'll have to rent the longarm to do it as they are mostly king size so I must have some $to do this.
2. I also have 15 others needing quilting but are not earmarked for anyone.
3. To keep up with the swaps on board.
4. To attempt a landscape quilt.
5. To finish the 3 quilt tops in progress.
6. To sew with my son.
7. maybe even clean the house, lol.

I've made this same resolution for the past couple of years - and resolve to finish at least 2 projects for every new bunch of fabric I bring home. I usually last until about mid-February.
So this year, I resolve not to but any fabric unless I have a specific project in mind. No more bringing something home just because I like it when I don't have a clue what I'll do with it. Maybe I'll last til March this year!

margaret light 12-29-2009 08:50 AM

Ladies: Although I have followed all of you for a very long time, I have only had to ask one question, since it seems that most of the things I need to ask, are already answered. You are all so awesome, thank you for the information, resources and encouragement you give us all. My resolution for 2010, perhaps try to participate in the forum, start on a quilt for my DS and DIL, try to curb my appetite for more fabric (also the one for chocolate as I sew), generally try to do more, grumble less and just GET IT DONE!! :) Bea

dmackey 12-29-2009 09:13 AM

If I make a resolution, are you all going to help me keep it? LOL!

I have an enormous amount of fabric that I want to cut into strips for scrappy log cabins, so this year I need to make at least one to be sure that is how I want to use it. This will also be my first log cabin.

I need to learn to paper piece. I get the idea, but have yet to do it, and I just love the Mariner's compass block, so I want to make a quilt in patriotic colors.

I make many quilts for military, deployed, and injured soldiers, so I need to focus on just purchasing red/white/blue fabrics, and try my best to avoid those yummy oriental fabrics of which I now probably own over 300 yards worth!

I have had the perfect fabric to make my SIL a king quilt for three years. I really need to decide on a design and get that quilt started!

My first grandchild is on the way and I am in the process of making two quilts, so I have the right colors when we find out the child's gender. This quilt will get priority!

I have a very dear friend who has been by my side in working military charities and he has stated that he really wants to win one of my quilts. He should have one, and I should make it, but I don't know how to sew in my sleep, but I'm working on it!

I am NOT buying any fabric this year that is not going directly in a quilt that is a WIP and that is always a patriotic quilt. I have way too much and don't want to be the one to die with the biggest stash! LOL! Besides, I need lots of batting and can save for the sales on Warm and Natural.

My intended purchase this year is to get Kaye Wood's Starmaker set of rulers. I love her quilts.

I am with both of you ladies. :-) I would love to take a class but am to shy to try one. So I learn from books and videos, my loss :-(
LOL Liz

bstanbro 12-29-2009 11:48 AM

Make a LOT of quilts. That is my resolution.

Boston1954 12-29-2009 02:59 PM

I would like to make another Log Cabin using only scraps. I made a very large blue one for Jim for Christmas, and it felt REALLY good using up some smaller pieces of my stash.

mommaB 12-29-2009 04:03 PM

1. ORGANIZE the sewing room :-D :-D ..again :?

thismomquilts 12-29-2009 04:13 PM

My goals, not necessarily in this order though...
1. Organize/create sewing room... I have one - it just needs to be one. (make sense?)
2. Finish my youngest stepdaughter's quilt, now that I have the backing.
3. Make my daughter's quilt. By April.
4. Finish all projects already started.
5. Finish my BOM we began in July - all blocks will be done by June, just need to make sure I quilt it when it's finished.
6. Continue making quilts for those who want to pay for them, monies going to daugther (Until October)
7. Make items for craft fairs so I can be ready in the fall.
8. I would LOVE to start an Etsy shop... we'll see...

I am going to do the same thing, Lisa! What fun! Have you read any of the books?

mcdaniel023 12-29-2009 05:17 PM

I have a wonderful stash and more on the way. I want to make good use of it without adding more or at least not too much more. I want to fullfill all my commitments without getting to stressed out.

Judith 12-29-2009 05:43 PM

You will love the Kaye woods rulers when you get them too! I have a set and really like them a lot.

I like this one...like two steps forward and one step back...I could do that!!
I have been working on my UFO list today; its up to 39 pieces!!!

brookemarie19 12-30-2009 10:24 AM

1.Build a sewing room and fill it with fabric!!! Hubby has promised to make me one this year, so I hope it happens.;-)

2.Make a quilt for three of my kiddos... I made one for the youngest last year and now they all want one too.

3.Join my first block of the month and swap, as I have never even heard of them for quilting until recently... man, I'm pretty far behind huh.

AkAngel 12-30-2009 10:44 AM

Well I am determined to finish some UFO's and WIP's this year before starting more. So like some others here I want to finish 2 projects for each new one.
I've sat here this morning making a list of my UFO's and I'm upto 10 of them!! The oldest being my rotary basic quilt I did in a class about 10 years ago but I got ahead of the process and backed and bound the top before having it quilted....ooops so I want to take the binding off and change the batting because its a lofty polyester and I don't think I'd be happy with it then have it quilted and try again

Bucket 12-30-2009 08:25 PM

1. To spend a little (or lot) of time working on my UFOs each day. I'd like to see at least five of them make it off my shelves and onto beds.

2. To start a monthly charity quilting group. I know many of them already exist across the country and I'd love to add one more to the mix.

3. To learn how to use my new sewing maching for added details.

4. To improve my machine quilting so I can finish the lovely tops just waiting to be quilted.

Elizabeth-Liz 12-30-2009 08:58 PM

I am planning to make a quilt a month. Not sure if I will make it, but my goal is to have 12 quilt project completed by the end of 2010. I am working on completing 3 right now just for 2009. I already have to make two twins for my niece and two baby quilts for twins due in March. Also to get my sewing room started and completed.

Oklahoma Suzie 12-31-2009 07:25 AM

To be more orginized with my time.

lots2do 12-31-2009 11:26 AM

Oh, I like that idea - one project a month for a total of (at least) 12 at the end of the year. I also would like to watch one chick flick a month this year. Somehow, I never seem to be in charge of the remote much...
lots2do

edited to add:
I think I'll document my progress in a journal with photos etc. Yes, I like this idea. So simple but so motivating.

Charity Quilter 12-31-2009 01:14 PM

Continue making quilts for the children ~

Hubby is going to build a separate garage sometime after the new year, which will allow me to take over the double car garage that is attached to the house. It is heated and a/c'd so I will be converting it to a big quilting room and perhaps have free classes to teach Girl Scouts or whom ever wants to learn. That is my dream.

The sky is the limit!
