2014 Quilting Resolutions?

As the house is all ready for my Christmas Eve guests, I just sat down in my sewing room and started thinking about 2014. I have to do a baby girl quilt (by February), 2 grand daughter quilts (college/high school grads) by May next year. And started thinking about the problems I had with quilting in 2013. To help me enjoy quilting more (for me) I made some important decisions (resolutions)

1.) Organize my notions, they are all over in different drawers, tubs, bags - I have doubles, triples of everything it seems.

2). I am overwhelmed by fabric abundance, so I am going to put together quilt kits in "dollar store" tubs. Put all the bags of scraps into 2 medium tubs, the rest of the scraps I will let go. Then I will put all large 5 yards or more fabric on boards to make it easier to see potential backings.

3). Buy extra bobbins, and when I put together a project, wind 6 or 7 bobbins and put them and the spool of thread with the fabric.

4). I am going to give myself "permission" (silly but I have to do this) to have 4 or 5 quilting projects going at the same time. Maybe this will prevent me from getting bored with a project and creating more UFO's.

5). I will buy no new fabric unless it is for a project (baby girl quilt). (Ongoing fabric moratorium - first resolution usually broken).

Any suggestions for me to add,

What are your quilting resolutions for 2014?

ManiacQuilter2 12-24-2013 10:37 AM

I am too old to make resolutions. I will try to organized my quilting area, but I have had that for my resolution for the past 20 years. Maybe if I don't make a resolution, it just might get done this year !!

AngeliaNR 12-24-2013 10:38 AM

I want to work on techniques next year.

Bobquilts 12-24-2013 11:03 AM

I am resolving to finish all the quilts that I have started in the past years that haven't gotten done. Same resolution that I made the past two years.

MadQuilter 12-24-2013 11:08 AM

Do some --- quilting, that is. My UFO pile is high so I have choices.

Groovy Pieces 12-24-2013 11:12 AM

I resolve not to buy any more quilt books and/or patterns  . . . GP

Nammie to 7 12-24-2013 11:30 AM

I want to learn how to make mitered borders in order to finish my Women of Courage quilt.
I want to learn how to make bias stems using bias bars in order to finish my pineapple quilt.
I want to practice quilting on my "cheater" quilt in order to gain confidence to quilt my patriotic quilt.
I want to clean the closet in my sewing room in order to continue organizing my sewing room. (I've ruler folded and put away most of my fabric by color).

I think that is probably more than enough to get me through the year!!

Merry Christmas every one.

quiltswithdogs 12-24-2013 11:45 AM

I must set aside current projects for myself that are to try new patterns and techniques until I begin and totally finish the quilt projects for 4 brides.... both my daughters, my niece, a friend's daughter I've watched grow up. Since my Rheumatoid Arthritis occasionally flares up to more pain and fatigue, it's crucial to complete each gift...early. 2 need to be done by April and the other 2 by July. So, even with absolute deadlines to be met, I will have a fun quilting year!

By the way, Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to everyone of you!

peachs 12-24-2013 11:48 AM

my goals for the next few months:
~to learn to machine quilt (i'm new...still haven't attempted anything bec i'm scared...think i'll take a class on it first)
~to finish my quilt my grandmother and i started in 1991
~to finish the other 'practice' quilts i've started...
i have no idea how long this will take me. i'm a weekend sewer/quilter. so these goals may take up all of 2014

patsynel 12-24-2013 11:59 AM

The list is endless but the two main ones are:
1 Practice more and take a class on FMQ
2 Get my scraps cut and organized.

lynnie 12-24-2013 12:02 PM

they all sound good to me, maybe I can join you. hopefully.

maryb119 12-24-2013 01:02 PM

My goal for 2014 is to finish the king size quilt I have been hand quilting for the last 3 years. I challenged myself to hand quilt a big one and I have decided that I won't do that again. ;) I love hand quilting, just not such a big one.

quiltinghere 12-24-2013 01:17 PM

I have only one resolution for next year.

I've been happily busy with customers' quilts while my quilt tops hang nicely on the rod behind me.

So next year I'm going to schedule my tops in between customers' tops ... as long as there are no rush deadlines to meet. Hey! I may even pay myself when I'm done! :D

Let's all come back and see if we accomplish our goals!

Nan - IN

SharonTheriault 12-24-2013 03:56 PM

I want to practice FMQ so I can do better on my quilts. But just the opposite of that, I want to do more hand quilting. I started out hand quilting and now I want to get back to it. Those are my two.

Finishing my UFO's would also be nice... but let's be realistic, I don't think that will happen. :-))

GingerK 12-24-2013 04:11 PM

This is sort of a reverse resolution: I resolve to give myself permission to send quilts to a LA'er instead of first procrastinating and then dreading and finally never being happy with my own quilting. Why spend all that time and money on a quilt and then be frustrated by the quilting.

I resolve to take some classes. I really do, and I resolve to not let perceived work or family obligations intrude on some very much needed ME time.

I resolve to take compliments gracefully and and just say Thank You instead of pointing out that it could have been done better.

Okay I think that's enough for one year.

ILoveToQuilt 12-24-2013 04:25 PM

My 2014 goals: to finish all WIPs and UFOs BEFORE I start any new projects. HA....let's see how long this resolution lasts! LOL

Anita

hopetoquilt 12-24-2013 04:58 PM

I want to make quilts for me and for fun. No obligations to make for others.

i want to buy a used LAQ machine and learn to use it.

mom-6 12-24-2013 05:21 PM

Other than finish as many UFOs as feasible, my main goal is to reorganize my studio. It has become clutter central and not as much fun to play in any more.

Barb in Louisiana 12-24-2013 05:21 PM

All of the above. haha

Seriously, I think my inner brat just will not let me make a resolution and keep it. She is a thoroughly rebellious little girl and can make my life miserable. My response to her, in the coming year, is to pick a UFO (any of about 40) and finish them, one at a time. Some only need binding, some need the blocks put together, some have had only a few seams sewn before something new and more interesting came between me and them. My long arm sits there idle while several quilts long to merge with their battings and backings and be beautiful. I have all the tools but my inner brat keeps bringing me new things to work on. She has to be banished! Anyone got any ideas?

I started quilting several years ago with the lofty goal to quilt something for each of my grandchildren. I've only managed 2 out of 8. Not a good average and now I've got some weddings coming up, some graduations I want to honor with a quilt and several quilts promised to other people that are important to me. And a new Judy Niemeyer kit, Bali Wedding Star that is calling my name. I'm going to have to name my inner brat just so I can tell her to get LOST! Leave me alone!

Part of my problem is I don't won't to make a quilt I don't love, and if I love it, I'm not sure I can give it away. If I never finish them, then I never have to make the decision of who gets what and where it will go. How do you overcome this? Am I just to darn selfish? Probably so. I shall pray for God to help me let go and trust that someone else will love my quilt as much as I love it.

Oh, and there are several quilting groups on this board that I want to join.... 50 state stars, the Spikey blocks, the medallion club. Does it ever end?

Merry Christmas to all....... I'm off to the sewing room!

malindaann 12-24-2013 05:32 PM

To simplify my expectations to my current skill and finish a few quilts myself rather than wait until I think I won't ruin the top with bad quilting.

huntannette 12-24-2013 06:36 PM

I think mine would be to use the fabric I bought in 2013 as much as possible

franc36 12-24-2013 06:40 PM

My sewing room is filled with kits that I have made up over the past year. I have boxes and boxes of those kits. My goal for 2014 is to make at least 2 of those kits into quilts each month. I am constantly signing up for Craftsy courses. My goal is to complete one of those courses each month. I also want to practice FMQ more often. I think 2014 will be a fun quilting year for me.

Dolphyngyrl 12-24-2013 08:47 PM

work on my FMQ skills
finish at least 2 UFO's

happylab 12-24-2013 09:34 PM

Practice my FMQing. Complete a quilt for my brother, sister, a tee shirt quilt and then do a friends' quilt. Then I can tackle 4 - mystery quilts I want to do. Then make a few scrap quilts. Plus, complete the tops of the several quilt tops from QB swaps I've signed up for recently. Finally I want to learn and master my EQ-7 program by going through all 23 lessons from the QB last year (I think). Is that too much to tackle in one year? I'll give it my best try. Oh I forgot, to organize my sewing room so I have room to sew and quilt. Happy holidays and happy sewing.

sandy l 12-25-2013 04:21 AM

Try, again:rolleyes:, to finish my UFO's before I start another quilt. And to try to get over the hang-up I have about using my fat quarters collection. I don't want to cut them up, 'cause if I do I might find a pattern that I would have liked better to have used them for. I know, dumb:o

ka9sdn 12-25-2013 06:01 AM

I want (NEED) to clean up my sewing/quilting studio. I just cannot seem to put things away. I set it down to take care of later and that never happens. That is enough of a challenge. I'm doing really good not buying any new fabric this year using up what I have which is still too much.

retiredteacher09 12-25-2013 03:06 PM

Nammie to 7: Missouri Star Quilt Company has a mitered binding tutorial called The Ultimate Quilt Binding tutorial. I used it to learn how to make mitered corners. I just watched a little of it now and realized I miss a step when I do them that would make the corners even better. :)

My goals are to make 4 more quilt tops from my MILs stash for her unmarried grandchildren as her dementia prevents her from doing them. Then I can give the tops to another family member so she can get someone to finish them. Also, I plan to make 20 bags for Sadie's Dream for a Cure to reduce my stash along with sewing for 2 charity groups.

Thankfully I am retired but I need to put 'stay at home' dates on my calendar. :)

Merry Christmas everyone!

Connie

I would like to be more giving. I have heard of Project Linus. What is Sadie's Dream? What are some other charities you can quilt items for? Thanks

HouseDragon 12-25-2013 04:47 PM

Oh dear! Same as last year's: 2013 HouseDragon's Year to Finish UFOs. :o Of course, it will be renamed: 2014 HouseDragon's Year to Finish UFOs.

I did finish two more tops last year ... did I mention I'm not the fastest quiltmaker on the planet? However, with relative little effort I'll have fourteen tops to sandwich and quilt. Finding TIME is the problem ... maybe I need to add "NO!" to my vocabulary.

My second resolution is start seriously practicing FMQ-ing so I can completely finish those fourteen tops on my own. I'd like to "custom" quilt each top.

I do have one "masterpiece" Log Cabin flimsy with over 140 light/dark pink fabrics (I stopped counting) which I'll send to a longarmer for real custom quilting. :)

quiltingeileen 12-25-2013 04:52 PM

I want to learn how to appliqué.

faykilgore 12-25-2013 06:30 PM

I have a OBW to assemble and a SAS to finish before April when I dismantle my sewing room (the dining room) and put my house on the market. Maybe this is the year I will make serious progress on the "My Cats Garden" hand appliqued nightmare I've been working on for 14 years! Without a sewing room, it's time to get the handwork back out.

MacThayer 12-25-2013 07:22 PM

My quilting resolutions are:
1. To use up much more of my stash. We recently moved, and even I was appalled at how much fabric I have.

2. To take more time to be social, because I tend to hole up in my sewing room for hours and days, and when I
come up for air, I realize I'm very much behind on socializing.

cathyvv 12-25-2013 07:29 PM

My personal resolution is to make quilts for my 'grands' before I make a charity quilt. I'm not getting any younger, as the saying goes..

Lori S 12-25-2013 07:55 PM

My resolution.. more out put than input!

Seaside gal 12-26-2013 04:48 AM

I resolve to quit changing my mind about the color, design, etc. and just finish my son's quilt. He wanted burgundy and gray and then I added deep blue sashing and gold cornerstones. Now I wish I had not added the gold. But that would mean a lot of ripping out. I think I will just finish it. Or not. Maybe.

grandme26 12-26-2013 06:28 AM

I do not make resolutions, to easy to break. I make plans. I have numerous BOMs and mystery quilts to work on and catch up on, so that is what I will do.

nhweaver 12-26-2013 06:29 AM

This is a good one - easy to remember, and applies to my entire life!

You all have such great plans for the new year.

Mine is probably the same as it's been for a few years..... finish those UFOs. And I've made great progress this past year..... I'm down to 4. But, those 4 are going to take some time. That's okay. As I get closer to being finished on any of them I get more excited to finish. It's the middle part that bogs me down. I'm excited to start quilts and excited to finish them..... not so excited in the middle stages.

And I have a few quilts in the planning stages that I need to get done....
2 great nephew quilts to finish all the greats. I have a total of 15 great nephews and nieces and only have 2 left to make.... I'm doing okay.
I have a baby quilt to make for a cousin's 1st grandbaby. That one won't take long... just need to get it started.

So, my 2014 plans are do-able..... Yeah!!

Happy New Year to all of my quilty friends out there in QB-land. My crystal ball tells me we'll be encouraging each other all year..... you're a wonderful group to be friends with.

What are your quilting resolutions for 2014?

I like yours but I also want to add:

Do some work on each UFO that I already have.
Make at least 1 charity quilt for an adult and 1 for a child.
Start early on Christmas gifts.
Spend more time on my embroidery machine.

Tudey 12-26-2013 07:04 AM

I made a quilt top for our bed---over a year ago. This year, I resolve to get the darn thing done and on our bed! I need to make at least one armchair caddy for a friend, and another friend has requested a wedding quilt for her son who is getting married in **gasp** June...so I had best get on that!
