2021 Quilting Goals
What are your Quilty goals for 2021? Are you carrying any others over from 2020? What are your ongoing never ending goals?
Old Goals: 1: Work more with EQ8 2: Back a quilt with Minky 3: Make a paper pieced quilt. New Goals: 1: Become more proficient with Auto Pilot. 2: Learn a new technique. 3: Use more scraps. 4: Spend more time learning about color. 5: Spend more time quilting. Never Ending Goals: 1: Organization 2: Winning the lottery. This year I only managed to make one new quilt and finish my Frolic; an all time low for me, what a chaotic year it has been. I cant wait to hear and see what your goals are! |

I agree Tallchick, not only has it been a chaotic year but difficult to focus at times...
2020 leftovers: quilt Frolic and design an airplane appliqué quilt for grandson who is now a year old already. goals for 2021: make a king size quilt for our newly painted master bedroom where we just pulled carpet and put in hardwood floors. I usually take a class each year to challenge my skills so I am enroll in a virtual class for QuiltCon this coming spring. I would like to do a few more charity quilts this year as well. good luck on your list Tallchick...it appears to be reasonable to undertake. |
Quilting goals for 2021:
1. finish 12 UFOs (I started out this year with 33 and am down to 20 Yay!) 2. Try really really hard not to make more UFOs https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png 3. continue updating my quilt records 4. start and finish 1 new art quilt based on one of my doodle drawings 5. learn to use EQ8 (this one is left over from last year) Rob |
My goals include:
-catching up on quilting my very large pile of completed tops and other ufos -completing modifications to sewing room to better utilize space From a discipline stand point I am attempting to stay on a schedule where once I quilt three existing tops and one ufo (to get it to completed top stage) I will allow myself to start a new project, if I am so inclined. That way my ‘to be quilted pile’ will get smaller over time. I was able to substantially reduce my stash this year and hope to keep that up for 2021. good luck to everyone with your 2021 goals! |
I retired in 2018. In 2019, I made 30 quilts that were given to shut-ins. In 2020, my quilt guild made quilts for children.
2021 is MY year! I have so many UFO's that need finishing. And there is a mystery quilt I would like to do that starts in January. |
Finish up my sister and niece's quilts, that's number one.
Number two would be to start other quilts for my family and hopefully, get one going for my best friend. As for techniques I want to learn, I'd like to do better with my bindings. Sometimes they hold perfectly, other times, not so much. I need to slow down when it comes to that part of my quilting. |

My goals for 2021 are to use some more of my stash, only buy fabric as needed to complete a project, and finish 4 quilts that are near completion (need borders and backings).
|
I made a large number of tops in 2020 being isolated. So for 2021 the plan is to finish all of them and be loaded with a stack of new quilts.
|
I had quite a prolific year making quilts and things for my granddaughter, among others.
I love the lottery goal! LOL I should at least buy a ticket!! Goals for 2021: Work on a BOM quilt for said granddaughter. It's mostly applique and I didn't think about it when I signed up. It's from Shabby Fabrics. Reorganize my sewing room. It's a HOT mess. Make a half-size BH mystery. The last one came out ugly so I'm doing half this time. |
2019 started Dresden plate squares for 2 twin beds. Notice I said started. I still don't have enough squares to start the sashing. My excuse is I've done donation quilts, and binding for others in group.
2021 goals are to finish Dresden quilts, and keep helping with donation quilts. |
My goals are the same as for 2020 (and every year, it seems.) Complete more UFOs and try not to start too many more quilts.
|
Goals for 2021
Downsize: fabric, tools, books, UFO's |
I plan to finish one QAYG stripe quilt. Make two more. All large. All are scrappies.
I also would like to make at least 33 quilts for our foster kids in my county. I hope there aren't any bad surprises in 2021 to slow me down. |
due to the pandemic I was super prolific this year quiltwise. But my goals are to do quilts for all 3 grandsons to add to their I Spy quilts they have already. I want to put together my first Judy Niemeyer quilt and plan to do at least one JN class to work on another one I have fabric and pattern for. I'm taking some on-line classes at QuiltCon in Feb to learn how to use my EQ8 for designing modern quilt and excited about that. Our family is planning a multi-generational week in Michigan this July and will want to make either a lap quilt or table topper to take to our friends that live up there. I also have a stack of quilts to quilt and at least one of those will go to a regional and our local guild shows too.

This is a really interesting thread!
My goals are essentially trying to finish up UFOs/WIPs and actually start some new stuff... 1. I have 3 tops that will need to be longarmed (sent out) to finish - would like to do as many of these as finances will allow 2. Finish Stars Sampler (UFO, currently a top - needs de-papering, basting, and quilting - I plan to handquilt this one) 3. Finish Pumpkins wallhanging (WIP) - I'm in the process of handquilting this, have it all planned out and it is fairly small, so I feel confident that this is achievable, unless I get interrupted for some reason 4. Finish Penguin Promenade BOM (WIP) - done the blocks, awaiting the setting instructions, will most likely handquilt 5. Progress Sylvia's Wedding Sampler (UFO) - am doing this by hand, have about 1/3 of the blocks done, tend to do a couple of blocks and then put it away for a few months (hence aim to 'progress'...). No rush 6. Start Puffins quilt (been wanting to make this one for years!) 7. Start Reindeer quilt - a kit (unusual for me) only just acquired. Would be great to get it done for next Christmas, but no pressure 8. Do more quilting!! Have a great holiday season everyone - and here's to a happy, healthy, productive 2021! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png |
Start a Christmas quilt for next year using my Christmas fabric stash.
Use the Christmas Table Runner kit I bought 2 yrs. ago. Go through my Quilting books that I never use and donate them. Practice my free-motion quilting more often. Declutter my sewing space. |
My goal is to go thru all of my fabrics and organize and make a donation of fabrics I no longer want or need. Then I would like to make a crazy quilt and a few other quilts that I have patterns for and have wanted to make them for a couple of years. AND-oh yes-finish up some UFO's. Gosh, I am tired just writing about my goals!!
|
My goal is to learn to use rulers with my long arm. I like Quilter's Apothocary rulers with the handles because they are easier to hold them with my arthritis. I want to finish a few more UFO's. I finished several of my own in 2020 but I have some that were my mom's UFO's and I want to make them and take them to her in assisted living.
The list of things I have to do this year is growing. I have 2 graduation quilts to make and also a prom dress made from the fabric my granddaughter has chosen. Another granddaughter is getting married so i have alterations for a wedding dress and 5 bridesmaid dresses. Good thing I am retired and can sew all day if I want to. LOL |
Great topic, tallchick! (I am a shortchick named Lisa, LOL.)
A couple of years ago, I began to want to understand who I am as a quilter. It seemed admirable to me that you can instantly tell an Edyta Sitar quilt, or a Tula Pink, or Bonnie Hunter. etc. What sort of quilt did I like best, and where do I want to go with my quilting? At the same time, I felt a great impatience with my stash, so I started picking out focus fabrics, organizing fabric groups around them and matching them with patterns. I was too impatient to finish the quilts -- I wanted to whip through them and get my stash under control. I started prepping, or kitting up, the quilts -- cutting, and making units to whatever point made the most sense for storing the projects. I figure that by the time I work with all of these fabric and pattern genres, I should have a better sense of what kind of quilt and what sorts of fabrics I enjoy working on/with most. My thought is that I won't necessarily finish all of these to completed quilts, but that I can donate or try to sell the tops or blocks I'm less interested in giving more time to. So that is my goal for the coming year -- continuing the prepping project. And also, improving my bedtime habits so that I get more sleep, so my back has time to recuperate and doesn't constantly wimp out on me while I'm working. |
In reading through this thread, I noticed a few of you have 2021 goals regarding EQ8 so I’m wondering if it is really challenging to learn or is it something that if you don’t use it often enough you get rusty?
|
jmoore...I have found it really challenging to learn, myself. To the point where I have mostly given up. Could be just me...I'm not super computer-smart.
Watson |
This last year, I did a lot of playing with EQ8 (and feel comfortable with it) and very little quilting. I started some easy projects but never finished any of them.
My 2021 goals are:

I find it easier to use than EQ7 by far, but know I'm not getting all the benefits of it that I could. I'm using it more and more but wanted to learn to do some of the modern quilt designs that I see. |
In 2020, I was still settling in my new home and decorating, landscaping, gardening, organizing etc. My priority was to make the quilts I wanted for each room etc. I was able to do that except my master bedroom...mostly cuz I couldn’t decide on a pattern for the bed. I finished a quilt thinking that was what I wanted for bed then...changed my mind. Finally, I decided and have kitted it up. That is my next project.
1) Start/Finish Master bed quilt. (I’m starting that this week) 2) Start/Finish Baltimore Album quilt (been kitted for 2 years...this will be on-going thru the year. I’d like to complete 2-3 blocks a month) 3) Start/Finish as many kitted up projects in project boxes. (I think I have only 8 kitted quilts left to do and a myriad of pillow projects) 4) Make 2 QOV (or more if I can) 5) Use my pre-cuts 6) Stay organized Merry Christmas! |

2021 Quilting Goals
My 2021 goals are to first quilt my daughter's Lone Star quilt. It was supposed to be done for Christmas but I'm giving her the top. Quilting to be done later. Then I have several panels that I would like to work on and make lap quilts or wall hangings. I also have a quilt that my Great-Grandma made and it needs to be quilted. I'm torn between using the longarm or to hand quilt it. It's a School House quilt, hand and machine pieced. Over 75 years old.
|
I keep trying this! Wonder when I will see results!
|
I looked back to last year's thread and my goal then was to quilt for myself, not to other people's deadlines.
I accomplished this and I will carry that over to 2021. I also want to finish the quilting on a number of tops that I have sitting on my shelf. If I have any pattern goals, maybe a bargello. I've never done one. Watson |

I have one quilting goal: To enjoy it more! Being a perfectionist is not fun. I have started to stop making small corrections, that looking at the finished quilt and enjoying the whole thing instead of focusing on the tiny imperfections will make me happier. Leaving a small imperfection is a badge of honor and opens the door to more creativity.
|
Jmoore- I have found EQ8 challenging simply because I don’t spend enough time working on it. It seems to be more user friendly than EQ7 was, but I just don’t work at it often enough so I spend a lot of time relearning stuff I thought I knew.
Rob |
My only goal for 2021 is to make a king sized quilt for our bedroom. This will be my first king sized (I’ve made a queen sized before) and I expect it take me most of the year. It will be my first paper pieced quilt. And it will also hopefully make me more proficient at FMQ.
|
My goal for 2021 is to finish my BOOM quilts from squares made by so many from this quilting board. I have a long way to go! They haven't made it to the flimsy stage, yet.
|
My main quilting goal for 2021 is to finish some of the (many!) UFO's that are accumulating. I'm really hoping to make a dent in things.
My main goal for 2020 was to clean and organize my sewing room. While I could continue this indefinitely, things look and function much better. |
Thank you Rob, Teen and quiltingshorttimer for your responses regarding EQ8 concerns. I’ll keep it on my wish list...
Amethyst, what a big undertaking with a king size goal...especially a paper piecing project. I look forward to seeing your work along the way. SallyS, I have had to realize similar OCD traits. LOL I hope you find more joy in your hobby in 2021 |
My goal is to practice my FMQ. I'd say I'm now an advanced beginner, but in 2021 I want to do more deliberate practice of both stencils and freehand techniques.
|
My goal is to clean and organize my sewing room. I need to donate fabric and books I haven't used.

I took a cue from Watson and checked the 2020 Goal thread that was started this time last year by tallchick. https://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f...a-t308705.html Yup some of them were accomplished, but what a detour many of us had. Who would've thought that mask making would be a way to reduce stash?
These were my 2020 goals and kind of a repeat for next year! 1. Finish a quilt and not let it go to UFO land. I started 6 and finished 3 of them. One is I consider a WIP. Started some mini's that I plan to finish soon. 2. Continue to work on the UFO quilts. Our guild offered a challenge this fall for the coming year and this has been a great incentive for me. (I'm also on the UFO challenge thread on the QB.) I finished 12 UFO's this year...all of them full to queen size. A great feeling as I look forward to finishing more! In my head counting up the flimsies and some of the WIP's that I plan to finish. 3. Use as much fabric from my stash to make quilts and only buy what is needed to finish a quilt. Most of what I bought this year was for intended projects...definitely more fabric out than fabric in. One piece was because it is perfect for my sister and a new 2021 quilt will be one for her. 4. Make #2 Grand's graduation quilt. He doesn't graduate until 2021, but I want to be ahead of the game when in comes to making graduation quilts. #1's quilt is done for this spring, but #3 and#4 are in 2022. This didn't happen. I'm still waiting for the T shirts. We haven't gotten together June and with recent Covid spikes it might be a while. Graduation reception has now been rescheduled in July, so I will have some time once I get the shirts. Need to check on what the 2 Juniors want for 2022 quilts. 5. Make donation quilts (small and mini) for Grand's grade school, local hospital, and fall church fundraiser. That didn't happen but got others done instead. 6. Continue to work on FMQ skills on the LA. I'm now using pantographs and enjoy it. Every time I use the LA, I learn something new...maybe ruler work will be a new goal in the upcoming year. Thanks for starting this thread again, tall chick! |
