30's fabrics
Have a large variety of 30's fabrics, yardage and fat quarters. Any suggestions for patterns. Thanks

I would pick something from that era. There are many patterns that were popular then... dresden plates, churn dash, grandmother's flower garden. What you pick should probably be decided by the quilting process you enjoy most. Do you like applique? Do you want it pieced etc. Maybe google 30's quilts or depression era quilts or something like that for ideas. I'm sure something wonderful will come to you.

I'd take a look at anything by Darlene Zimmerman, who has designed 30's style fabric, has a website, and has written books, same with Eleanor Burns.

My friend made a pattern called "American Pie" (I think that is what it is called) out of 30's fabric and it was so beautiful. I have seen many patterns done up with 30's fabric and they all are pretty. I love 30's fabric and have 2 bins full and hope to start on a new quilt soon. Also, you may google patterns made up of 30's fabric and many images will come up for you to search. Good luck and please share when you have made your quilt.

A lot of us on this board are starting the Farmer's Wife quilt in August. Come and join us! http://www.quiltingboard.com/blocks-...g-t266390.html

I made a quilt last year with 30s prints. I used my Go! Baby value die to cut the pieces and made up the pattern as I went along. It turned out great, went together quickly and would be very easy to make the quilt larger or smaller.

Ooh, Cari - I really like that quilt!! It just looks like a big hug.

I always like to look for free patterns on Google:

I made this one. 30's fabric's always reminds me of pinwheels.
Another idea I like is one called "That Thirty's Thing" http://www.quilterscache.com/T/ThatT...hingBlock.html I had seen it done in repro prints as well. |
Try a Smoky Mountain Stars with muslin background.

I am making one now with 30's repro. I picked Sun Bonnet Sue (since she is from the 30's) and Single Irish Chain (also from the 30's). Here's a rough sketch of what it looks like (colors are not accurate -- I'm using wedgewood blue, muted rose, golden yellow & muted sage -- both in the applique and in the chain in random order).
Oh, and half of the appliques are of Overall Sam on my actual quilt. It is a combination of 3 different quilts that I loved. :) |

Love your SS quilt, Bree, and it's going to be beautiful with those colors! Eager to see it!!
|
My first thought was Sunbonnet Sue and Grandmother Flower Garden.
|
Quiltingcandy,
That's exactly what I saw in one of the inspiration quilts I used. I just couldn't wrap my mind around making all those hexies. So pretty, but so much work! Maybe next time. :) |
I have always wanted the make Lori Smith's Ode to the 30's. It is more like a sampler and looks like a lot of fun. Perfect for those 30's prints.
|
I agree with Sunbonnet Sue, GFG, dresden, lots that will look good with those fabs!
|
You could do the "Farmers Wife - 1930's Sampler Quilt. Inspiring letters from farm women of the Great Depression and 99 blocks that honor them. Author Laurie Aaron Hird. Includes CD-ROM with the 99 block patterns. I am just about ready to get started on one of these. I can't wait!

Pollytink, I love your cat!!! Mine are just two grey tabbies - they are so sweet.

There are some really nice patterns in the tutorials right now that I think would lend itself well to 1930s fabrics.

Cari;
Love that quilt!! Stunning! |
Dresden plate really lends itself to 30's fabrics. The Dresden fans also work well with the 30's.
|
You might also look at the latest thing - Farm Girl Vintage. It seems like every quilt shop around is doing something with that book.
|
I made one with the Arkansas Crossroads pattern.

I'm currently working on a Grandmother's Flower Garden variation with mostly 30s style prints. I am also planning to use some of these same fabrics for a Double Wedding Ring quilt (eventually). Dresden Plate would be another pretty one as well as many of the appliqué designs from that era - sun bonnet sue etc.
