Have you looked at EB "Nine Patch Party" quilt that is in her Still Stripping book? She easily makes a positive and negative 9 patch block from two 8" cut squares. I made this quilt from her book using florals but it would be as easy to just make it from two fabrics.

I'd look at directions for a triple/double irish chain because they often have great strip quilting tips since they have patch blocks. If you are only doing 2 colors, I would strip piece A/B/A/B/A/B and then the second one would be B/A/B/A/B/A...OR you could just do A/B and then cut but that is more piecing after the cut. I think you would get better seam placement by sewing the six strips first before cutting...you just have to be very careful with your 1/4 inch seam and your pressing to not stretch your strips!
( For a 36 patch, using (6) 15" x 2.5" strips, sew a strata A, B, A, B, A, B. Subcut your 6 strata into 2.5" strips, reverse every other one. Easy peasy.) sorry luvspaper, you got there too. I make checkerboards for the kids and this is the easiest way. Makes one block with room for boo boos which I make a lot of. Lol!

Wait, another question...on the strip sets, do I iron the seams toward the dark, or should I iron them all one way? (I want to be able to nest the seams.) I think I was ironing them all the same way and it worked at first, and then did not...but I don't remember now why.
All one way, when you reverse every other row, you seams will nest.

Thank you everyone! I have a plan of attack now, and as soon as I get a minute to get into my sewing room I will try again! When I get it to work I will come back an update this thread...keep your fingers crossed!
