Have you looked at EB "Nine Patch Party" quilt that is in her Still Stripping book? She easily makes a positive and negative 9 patch block from two 8" cut squares. I made this quilt from her book using florals but it would be as easy to just make it from two fabrics.

I make checkerboards for the kids and this is the easiest way. Makes one block with room for boo boos which I make a lot of. Lol!

All one way, when you reverse every other row, you seams will nest.
