Here you go, you persistant quilters!!
This single 12 inch block(actually 12 1/2 unfinished) is a great exercise in paper piecing. Can't you just picture a QUILT of different shades of one color?? OR a scrappy look?? OR even black, greys and white?? What about a BLACK background??

Let me read your feedback to tell me you are still with us! :D

fun2quilt 08-01-2010 06:22 AM

Boy, are you quick!
btw, this looks like a great block, now to decide on the colors for it!

Now I am going to have to kick someone off the desktop so I can print this out!

I think it's time for a new printer, with wireless ability, just for me.

Kate 08-01-2010 04:41 PM

Thank you so much for going on with the block challenge!
I love this block. It would make a beautiful quilt.

mary quite contrary 08-01-2010 05:05 PM

OOOOO! I like this one. I'm not participating but I may have to start. I really like this one!

marymc 08-01-2010 05:16 PM

Oh, I am scared. I'm very scared. But I will try, wish me luck.

Butterflyblue 08-01-2010 05:47 PM

Can we just jump in and try this one even if we haven't done the other challenges? I didn't see any of the previous challenges.

stitchinwitch 08-01-2010 06:09 PM

Thank you, Kate - it seems to be a block with many possibilities!
aw come on, contrary! You will really like it - it is a basic paper piecing and imagine the quilt it would make!
marymc - good if you are scared, and think how PROUD you will be to see your creation! We can only grow when we tackle something out of our comfort zone!
SURE Butterfly! There are NO quilt police here! It is YOUR block. Check out the previous blocks - http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-51732-1.htm

Well this was a good lesson in what not to do. I printed paper piecing patterns at work but forgot the directions so I had to keep the computer on with directions showing. (no printer at home) Computer on main level, sewing room upstairs, countless trips up and down. Heat wave, high humidity and no A/C, sewing room felt like a sweat shop. Only 1 previous paper piece attempt (3rd block challenge). I was determined to do this on my day off. corners don't match, fabric cut short in places, print going in several directions, and I'm not crazy about fabric but I wanted to continue with previous challenge blocks. I think I will make a second attempt at this one!

ya know marymc, the colors are good. It is not a bad block - alot of times we are more critical of ourselves. You are getting the feeling of the paper piecing and learning - I guarantee that your NEXT caned seat will improve. Did you stitch RIGHT ON the lines? Keep it up and you will be a pro!

Butterflyblue 08-05-2010 07:47 AM

Mary - I really like the colors you chose. I am working on the block right now, and I'm having trouble getting the "canes" to line up right sometimes, too.

I thought I would just sit down this morning and whip out the block, but that is a lot of p.p. units! There aren't a lot of triangles, so it's not difficult, really, just takes time!

Okay, I finished mine up. As you can see, I did a different color arrangement. I have a lot of bright scraps/small yardage that I am making all my "test" blocks out of lately, so that instead of orphan blocks, I'll have the blocks for a sampler to give to charity.

A whole quilt of this pattern would look awesome, but would take FOREVER for me to make, so I think this will be the only block like this I do.

stitchinwitch 08-06-2010 12:27 PM

GREAT! That would make an AWSOME quilt :-)

Pretty blocks. I like the colors in both. I hope mine turns out that good. I have company this week-end. Maybe I can get mine done the first of the week.

Butterflyblue 08-06-2010 01:33 PM

fun2quilt - I really like the colors in yours. So bright, and just like amish quilts, the black really sets them off.

What is that airplane thing in the pic?

SueDor 08-06-2010 01:38 PM

All of you ladies have done a great job.

I looked and looked for the non=matching seam - can't find it! it is pretty! Where is mine?? You didn't see it??..............only kidding - it WILL be coming soon. You DON'T want to know what has been happening here....................

marymc 08-06-2010 02:25 PM

butterfly blue & fun2quilt,
Your blocks look wonderful. I am going to try again as oon as I have time. I know I can do better! I really like the bright/black combos.

Friendly Quilter 08-06-2010 02:35 PM

Love the block, but as you know paper piecing is not my thing. Ican not wait to see this.

I think it look great.

fun2quilt 08-06-2010 02:56 PM

The airplane thing I forgot to remove. It is a metal cutout of the plane my daughter flies on in the air force (AWACS).

Never even thought about the colors being amish, just like the combo.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 08-07-2010 02:07 PM

Haven't forgotten you, just busy... I'm flying thru a Kid Quilt for my neice, new record for me 5 hrs for the top, just 9 patch, + full blocks will finish tonight, if can keep all my ducks in a row. have my fingers X'ed.
Knew I'd be in trouble if she didn't end up w/something soon when she beboped in sewing room and ask what i have been working on, of course it wasn't this !! (and it has been a while since i've sewn for her) I promise not procrastination, just last minute planning. :)

Here is my block. It did not turn out as good as I had hoped it would. I may make another one later, I think I got into a hurry. I do like this pattern.

marymc 08-10-2010 08:55 AM

Looks great. I hope to try another one later today. Hurrying is my biggest problem. I'm too eager to see the end result.

Laura3 08-11-2010 04:43 AM

This is an amazing block and you guys are doing a fantastic job! Love every color choice! Can you tell me how you plan on quilting it? Will you hand quilt, machine quilt? Just curious...Would love to make one but was wondering how to machine quilt it. I don't have time to hand quilt...too many waiting for me to finish. My machine quilting is very limited...I cross hatch, stitch in the ditch, etc. My free motion is not so great...Thanks for any suggestions....Laura

stitchinwitch 08-11-2010 04:55 AM

The block is just an exercise in paper piecing and color placement and selection. I don't know if anyone plans to quilt it, unless they are making enough for an entire quilt - and for those of you that are wondering -----yes-----------mine will be posted soon.........

I am so proud....
I knew i had to try this again and I think I did pretty good this time. Not perfect but so much improved. I learned several lessons:
1. Tape not pins for me
2. Cut the template out with a 1/4 inch extra. I was less likely to have a shortage of fabric .
3. Cut the fabric slightly larger but close to the size i needed to help with placement.
4. If it's not right, rip it out!
5. Patience, patience, patience
6. Use good fabric for stability.

marymc 08-11-2010 10:10 AM

Oh, and feel free to scroll back and look at my first attempt. You can even snicker if you like because my confidence is restored now!!

stitchinwitch 08-11-2010 10:10 AM

That is sooooooo pretty!! You learned from this - that is what we are all here for!! Thanks!

fun2quilt 08-11-2010 11:03 AM

Looks perfect to me!

One other hint is to starch the fabric until it is almost like card stock, so much easier to work with.

Another hint is I cut out my fabric pieces before I start, some pp patterns have templates for this or give sizes and numbers of each to cut. This method doesn't save on fabric though, just makes piecing easier.

Kate 08-11-2010 01:24 PM

I like that...I really like the black backround. You did great!

Kate 08-11-2010 01:26 PM

fun2quilt....Thanks for the tips. I am going to do that for sure the next time.

Laura3 08-12-2010 08:52 AM

I didn't realize it was just to play with a block...I just assumed all blocks would be made into a quilt....So much fun and not alot of pressure to always have to make something into a quilt....

Butterflyblue 08-18-2010 02:28 PM

Marymc - very nice block! Love your colors.

marymc 08-18-2010 06:22 PM

Thanks butterflyblue, I have learned a lot. wonder if we will get another challenge?? I think I've learned more through this than I could in a lot of the classes offered. I am so thankful for everyones kind words.

stitchinwitch 08-19-2010 05:49 AM

I am glad that you enjoyed the 4 challenges, but with all of the "copywrite" rules, I really have to stop these now. So sorry---------------

mbogenpohl 08-19-2010 05:51 AM

Beautiful blocks ladies! My brain don't seem to like paper piecing very well I guess I can't think backwards!!! LOL!

Kate 08-19-2010 01:55 PM

I am so sad hearing that. I really enjoyed this and have learned from it.
Thanks for doing this!

stitchinwitch 08-19-2010 02:23 PM
