5 inch blocks
 

I have a lot of scrappy 5 inch blocks cut but don't want to make a boring nine patch quilt. please help!

scrappy trip around the world, or make half-square triangles out of them (the kind where you sew and then cut). Here is one, but there are other ways to set them together. Basically any Log Cabin set, you can use for HST's.

I made a wonderful Morningstar quilt with my 5" blocks. Have you seen the books by Pat Speth (just one of many nickle quilt books) in which she uses 5" blocks? They are truly fine and many patterns use scrappy blocks. Have fun. There is a world out there of 5" block patterns!

Oh... do a get any of the Nickel Quilt books by Pat Speth. I think there is a total of three in the series. They are filled with nothing but designs specifically for 5 inch squares ( hense the name "Nickel" quilts). They are my go to books for scrap quilts.
I have two of the three and highly recommend them for the scrapper !

I am making a ten minute block with 5 in. block and it is turning out nice.

I also suggest the Nickle quilt books. Usually you can find them in your library. I know I have looked through one book at my library, and I have loved what I have seen. I just need to get busy on things.

I made a Disappearing 9 Patch with 5" charms, plus a few more.

5 inch squares will make 4 inch finished half square triangles and/or 4 inch finished four patches, and from there you can go anywhere! What about a jewel box quilt?

If you have the dresden ruler - you can make dresden blades - you can get alot of blades out of a charm pack and it looks good scrappy too.

let the sashing tell the story... ignore the blocks and choose a color palette.... purple to mauve to lavendar to yellow, or forest to deep green, to olive to sage... whatever your favorite color range is. Then put the darkest sashing on the bottom row, move up one row and one shade in your palette.... if the blocks are only 5" you can use a sashing that's 4" and overwhelm at the same time you're creating the color spread that's lovely all by itself... the blocks could be in the center, in the corner, off center but in the same position in every square.... anything you do within a large frame will be set off and muted at the same time...

hope someone can help. i want to use 5" squares for my disappearing 9 patch. i have 9 different fabrics. how many 5" squares do i cut of each fabric? thank you

Do you want to include all nine fabrics in each block? Or do you want to use certain fabrics for the corner blocks, certain fabrics for the middle blocks, and a certain fabric for the center block?

It may be a scrappy quilt but its a Jewel to me I just love it.Keep up the good work!!

love the nickle books. just about any scrap pattern can be made with 5" squares - 4 patch - put 2 quares tog, sew two sides (opposite each other), cut down themiddle between the sewn tog sides , press to dark, put tog, stitch sides again, cut down themiddle = 2 blocks ( I have done this, but am not sure I am saying it right)

Thanks for posting this. I have a Charm Pack too that I was wondering what I'd make with it. With all these great ideas I'm going to need to go get a few more. :) I have the Twister Ruler and the Dresden ruler so I think those are my top 2. :)

hi gail! since ive never done one before i thought i was going to use all 9 in each block. am i wrong? i know there is no right or wrong i'm just confused.

You could always look for charm pack quilt pattern books too. One of my favorites is Minnesota Charms book 2.

You can certainly use all 9 in each block. You will need to decide whether you want each block to be the same, in which case the same squares will remain whole in every block. If you want more variance in your quilt, you can rotate the fabrics in the 9 patches so that different fabrics remain whole in each block. Just advance each square one space in each 9 patch. So sq. 1 becomes sq. 2, etc. and sq. 9 becomes sq. 1.
To know how many squares of each fabric you must cut, first you have to decide on the size of quilt you want to make. Using squares cut at 5.5", each block will end up around 14". A lap throw could be 3 blocks by 4 blocks, where a twin might be 4 blocks x 5 blocks. So your quilt would be 56x70 plus sashing and/or borders. For the 4x5 blocks, you would need to cut 20 squares from each fabric, plus your sashings/borders, and backing. For the throw, you would need to cut 12 squares from each fabric. Basically, you need one square of each fabric in each block. So count how many blocks you need and that is how many squares of each fabric you will need.
For me, it often helps to plan it out on graph paper.

You can try the Disappearing 9 Patch like my 70's colored one or the 10 minute block like my black and white one where I used three different sizes of that block.

I have made several S9P lately. Using a variety of fabrics and altering the layout of your blocks, you get a different look each time!

You can also do a disappearing 9 patch with 5 inch blocks.

Unless you are determined to sew those blocks in their 5" shape, why don't you go to the different fabric web sites such as Timeless Treasures and look at their quilts. They always have some that have used enough different fabrics that they might as well be made from scraps. You would have to cut yours to triangles, strips, or something else, but they are usually new patterns not the usual same old things. You wouldn't be bored making a quilt like that. And you wouldn't have to buy a book.

Love your twister wall hanging. I would like to make one but am unsure how to go about it. Will have to do a google.

there are a lot of really nice patterns out there for Charm squares and quite a few books on them too. Good luck finding just 1 that you like!
