Today I bought a Omnigrid 6" x 24" ruler, been looking at it tonight and I don't like it, I don't like the color on it and I think It's hard to read. What kind do most of you like?
I have one of the older 6 x 24 omnigrid & love it, I'm not fond of the yellow ones.
It takes time to get used to it, but once you get it, is a good ruler.
The one I have is 4" x 18" and I'm looking to upgrade to a 24" one. Don't think I'd want the yellow either.
I have a yellow one and really like it.
I have a yellow one and it's fine by me.
I have a 6 1/2" X 24 clear/black markings by June Taylor and I really like it :D:D:D
When you all talk about 6 X ? rulers, are they really 6" and not 6 1/2" I have wondered about that, I would'nt like not being able to cut out 6 1/2" strips, how do you manage this? |
Never thought about that, I saw that ruler today and didn't get it because it was 61/2", I always read that you need a 6x24. Guess I should have asked this question before I bought it and I also like one with black markings.
A lot of my blocks are cut at 6 1/2" that is why I am so curious.
I have the 6x24 yellow it is ok. Although I use my 12 x12 1/2 and 6 x 14 more than my 24". my 14" is green.

I HATE the 6.5 x 24" rulers, however! On the last border for IRR2, I was scrambling for DD's 6.5 x 24" ruler. It is the black writing one and I don't particularly care for that, but if what you are after is a six inch finished something ... I can see the wisdom of using/having a 6.5 x 24". The ruler I use the most often is my 6 x 12" .. in fact, I have used one so much, most of the writing is gone from it, but I can't bring myself to throw it away because it is still a good ruler - - maybe not for measuring, but for something! LOL I feel the need for an intervention!<wave> |
I have dozens of rulers and most were bought at clearance prices. The last 6 1/2" by 24" I bought was for $7 on clearance at Tuesday Morning store. Can't pass up that price no matter how many I have. I have every line color but the one I like the best is the Olfa frosted.
I have the june tailor clear with black print. LOVE IT! 6 1/2 x 24. There isn't anything u can't do with this size. Heck, I'm even using it to install our laminate flooring!
I have the 6x12 yellow Optima & liked it just fine till I used one of the frosted ones at a quilt class. Those things are great! So much easier to work with and to see all the markings. Eventually I'm switching over to all the frosted ones.
I also love JuneTaylor rulers. I have 'em in several sizes. They're a bit thinner than others out there and flex a tiny bit so I feel like I have more control when I'm cutting. I feel like I can hold 'em down flat on the fabric easier. Does that make sense?
Oh and I have some with yellow on one side and black on the other. Unless I'm cutting black fabric, can't stand the yellow side. |
I have never bought the Omnigrid rulers because they seem visually cluttered to me and difficult to read.
I like my Rotary Rule rulers best, but there are other good ones on the market also. Have heard that the frosted Olfa rulers are good (non-slip) and have seen them for reasonable prices on Overstock.com. |
I like the Omnigrid with the green/black markings. What I use depends on the fabric I'm cutting. Black on black is so hard to see. One ruler I HATE is an old 12.5" square with raised markings on the back...it's being replaced next time it's on sale.
I love all my omni rullers, older ones to the newer ones.
I have doubles of the ones I use a lot. Have the smaller ones I use in MY camper trailor, can't leave home without a sewing machine and something to sew on ConnieF |
I love all my omni rullers.
I have a lot of the yellow ones and they are fine when you get used to them. Sometimes I feel the yellow is a little wide causing me to be slightly off in my measurements, so you have to be real careful. I picked up a pink one for Breast Cancer awareness and like the pink much better.
Most of mine are creative grids. The yellow on the omni just runs everything all together for me. Don't like them. Love the creative grids rulers
Use Olfa frosted rulers. Love the 6x24. Doesn't slip and markings are clear on darks and lights. Nancys Notions has all of them on sale. Search for OLFA.
I use the Creative Grids. The yellow ones make me cross-eyed! I use the 6 1/2 by 24 1/2. I just broke off a corner recently so replaced it with an 8 1/2! That comes in real handy.

I've got the one with black marking. the 24" is so big and unwieldy. I want a smaller one.

But, like you ... the reason I usually use the six by 12" ruler because it is more manageable. Most of the strips I cut are less than six inches wide or six inches at the max ... if you fold your fabric selvedge to selvedge and then fold it again, fold to selvedge, most all your strips can be cut using the 6x 12" ruler just fine. the 6 x 12 is very versatile. <wave> |

6 x 14, great to fold fabric around too. |

I also appreciate the thinner black marked lines. I've got many sizes of this brand and am always looking to add some of their specialty rulers too. I have my heart set on their largest square and will eventually convince myself to part with the wad of cash that it costs. My longest is the 6.5 x 24.5....couldn't function without it for projects that need yardage. I tend to use the smallest ruler that will get the job done while providing enough "landing" space for my "holding" hand (left)....so I really didn't need the squares smaller than the 6.5. If I could only have two rulers....heaven forbid....the 12.5 square and the 6.5 x 24.5....Creative Grids brand, of course! Next two would be the 4.5 x 12.5 and the 6.5 square. |
I use that size. Mine is clear with black lines - very easy to read. I bought it at my LQS... not sure of the brand
Sometimes I find it is not because of my ruler I am having a hard time seeing. The Olfa green mat especially at night is hard to see fabric contrast with the mat.
Is it more of a neon green?

My 6x14 ruler is neon green. My mat is just green. Next one will be a color. I wish I could have gotten the pink one when Olfa was selling them in support of Breast Cancer. |

I often wished that I had a 6 1/2"x24" ruler. Did not know that they existed. Will keep an eye out.

i love all the rulers i own from the Wrights EZ line.
i have one frosted ruler which i think is fabulous, too. i am not a fan of omnigrid rulers because the lines are so thick it's hard to cut accurately. i have just checked overstock.com the olfa frosted seem to be priced better than the wrights. that surprises me because wrights are always the most reasonably priced at every other site i've ever checked. shop around. i think you'd like the olfa frosted best, but if the wrights you find fit your budget better, you won't be disappointed. |
I recently got a green one and I can't read anything with it. The yellow ones - no problem.
Mine is clear and I love it.
