I can't get the other half to copy. You have to add the 6 1/2 and the 8 1/2 strips to the little white square. It's sort of like a quarter of a log cabin block. Look at the picture at the top right hand corner to see how to sew four of these units together. Trim the block into a square, cutting off all the little triangles. Sash them into a big quilt. It is beautiful.

I have been checking at second hand stores for mens 100% cotten shirts, true shirting material to use in scrap quilts. Even cheaper than fat quarters.

if you don't want to purchase more fabric, then make a quilt using what you have and mixing up the colors and fabric patterns. I bet the quilt will be beautiful!

I have to make extra effort to get light colored fabrics. I usually get twice as much as I would if it were dark, often 2 yards.
But I also like the suggestion of the 9 patch with a light square in the middle. That should look like the square in a square, or you could do a square in a square, depending on the size of your scraps. |
Yardage, when cut in small squares, rectangles, diamonds and triangles, goes a long way! Even a half yard of light fabric amid medium and dark will brighten up the quilt! Search for light fabric on sale racks, or just bite the bullet and purchase a yard of light/neutral. It won't break the bank!!

Go to a thrift shop and pick up some neutral men's shirts that are as cheap as fifty cents sometimes. They can be your light colors.

Slightly Off: Just love the colors in your quilt, they truly glow. That look is used often in Amish quilts, its always attracted me. I am in the camp with the people that just keep a bolt of go to light, usually white. The scrappies I am most drawn to are the ones with high contrast backgrounds, like black or white.

I buy fat quarters from JoAnns when they are a dollar each.

I know what you mean, that happens to me. Have to still find a color to add anyway.

There are a lot of patterns with a light background of just one fabric. I have a couple where I am using muslin as the background. Or something like a spiderweb where the darks and mediums just need one neutral for the "star" points. I use my light scraps far faster than the darks so had to figure out this to use them.
