I had the same problem so bought 6 yards of white, and several yards of snow white...which looks like butter, not a big fan of the snow white. White is one of those colors you can always use and not worry about it going out of style. Gray is another good choice.

While staying with my mother this past summer I used up most of my dark and light scraps making a exploding star quilt(top only so far) I know you said you had a few light scraps maybe you can trade some pieces with someone who has a lot of light, but I can recommend this pattern, as it is very pretty.

What would yo do with scraps when most of them are medium, a lot are dark and very few are light? Do you start buying light fabrics of new yardage? That's a bitter pill to swallow. I thought the idea was to use your scraps so you save money!

Go to a thrift shop and pick up some neutral men's shirts that are as cheap as fifty cents sometimes. They can be your light colors.
Our Goodwill charges $2.50 for shirts. But the $5 per grocery bag rummage sales can be a blessing. |
There is no way I could make an entire quilt with my scraps without buying something. My scrap bin isn't that big. There is another post asking what is considered a scrap and some quilters think anything less than three yards is a scrap. Three yards? I am lucky to have 1/4 yard left of anything. I know it stinks that you may have to buy more fabric but you would have to buy it for another project anyway. Money is always a problem for me so I use coupons and wait for sales. I don't have much luck at the thrift stores. Anyway, good luck to you and I wish you well with your scraps.

The one I made a little while ago used mostly darks. And I loved it. I have a hard time coming up with mostly darks, so if I were you, I'd consider myself fortunate to have so many.
It was this one: |
I also have that problem. I pick up lights from the sale bins. If my husband had enough shirts I could use them instead. (there was no GW, etc close to home)

Flyin: What a great quilt, lattices on a quilt always look amazing!

I used 2.5". It's more of my "go to" size and I often cut leftovers into 2.5" strips and later subcut into 2.5" squares. That's because it works well with 1.5" as well.
