? about a dnp

I was wondering if anyone has ever made a dnp that they cut corner to corner. I made a sample one and not sure how I like it yet. Was thinking about making a baby blanket to try it out. But don't want to waste the fabric if it comes out bad. Here is a sample block that I made of it. Don;t like the fabric but just wondering if it is the fabric that is throwing me or the pattern of it.

MadQuilter 01-01-2014 01:32 PM

I think it would make a lovely baby quilt. Generally If you continue the same pattern, the green triangles are going to create an interesting secondary pattern. I like it.

BellaBoo 01-01-2014 01:33 PM

The pattern looks too scattered for me. I like trying new ways to do blocks too.

For five bucks you can get one of those little blue "telescopes" that when you look through it it multiplies the block you are looking at an you can see what a whole quilt would look like before making the whole thing. I invested in one of these years ago and use it all the time. JoAnns' sells them or you can find them on line.

If you scan down to the second item, that is the viewer. This is only one source, the first one I came across.

You can also get one of those little folding two panel mirrors that will increase the view. Another useful tool that only costs a few bucks.

Spending a little on this in the beginning will tell you right away it it is going to work as a full quilt. Good luck
peace

I like how the little yellow triangles together look like butterflies.

Here is another pic with the fabrics that I like better. I had some scraps from another quilt that I made for my son using the new fabrics. I like how they look better but still not 100% yet. What do you guys think?

sahm4605 01-01-2014 02:22 PM

Can you see the secondary pattern that it makes? It is kinda cool but not sure if I lIke it yet

Prism99 01-01-2014 02:25 PM

I think cutting corner-to-corner doesn't work because only the yellow triangles line up with each other. The other two fabrics don't "hang" together because they are alternating squares and triangles. I actually think the fabric selection is fine; it is the cutting corner-to-corner that is the problem.

Here's an alternative way to cut:

Edit: Just saw the more recent photo you posted. Seems to me the secondary design is consistently disrupted, making the design discontinuous. I do like the colors better, but then I am always partial to blues!

sahm4605 01-01-2014 04:13 PM

I have done the ddnp before it is fun. This was just an attempt at something different

toverly 01-01-2014 04:27 PM

That's interesting but not my cup of tea. It's organized but then it's not. There doesn't seem to be a place for the eye to rest, but then, that may be exactly why someone else would love it.

cowgirlquilter 01-01-2014 05:14 PM

I like this......I think it would be cute!

KerryK 01-01-2014 08:13 PM

I kinda like it. I understand what Prism says, and she is right, but I still like it ... more so in the blues.

toodie11 01-01-2014 10:01 PM

DNP new cut

Actually, I really like it and I love the second one , I am going out to buy one of those viewers so
I can look at it again. thanks for sharing.

marsharini 01-02-2014 02:36 AM

I like it with both blocks shown and may try that in the near future.

Annie68 01-02-2014 07:19 AM

Oooh, I love it! I think the design will be very interesting, I also like the fabric.

mighty 01-02-2014 08:00 AM

I really like it!

AngeliaNR 01-02-2014 08:14 AM

Is that what this is?

I just saw it on a blog (In Color Order) this morning.

Here is another site that sells these great little tools: They call it a block viewer and if you scan down a bit farther there is the EZ View Magnifier.

I love this. It would be great for babies or young children. with different colors it could be for anyone

Retired Fire Chief 01-03-2014 04:46 AM

I like the fabrics, colors and think it would be a great baby quilt. How about adding a soft yellow sashing, or if it's for a boy a soft blue? I think finished it will be pretty. I think sashing will make the off-set green triangles disappear, they would bother me.

Rose Marie 01-03-2014 06:30 AM

Sorry but it looks like someone cut up a block all wrong. Don't like it at all.

tkee 01-03-2014 06:31 AM

I didn't like the first one at all, but I kind of like the Greek key secondary design of the second one.

maviskw 01-03-2014 06:35 AM

I think it's kind of cute for a small quilt, but you have to realize that when the blocks are sewn together, you will lose all the points of the squares in the edges.

I have seen a 16 patch cut up on the diagonal, and that's what happened to that, also. The poster just said that's what is supposed to happen.

GrammieJan 01-03-2014 06:47 AM

Excuse me, but I am from the old school...what exactly is a drip?

LindaR 01-03-2014 06:52 AM

it has the secondary pattern in the middle like it

lawsonmugs 01-03-2014 07:01 AM

Have you tried putting the squares together so the center is all yellow where they meet ? Maybe just a different look to try?

pocoellie 01-03-2014 07:25 AM

I like it, but if YOU don't like it, then I would go another way.

Grammie Sharon 01-03-2014 07:30 AM

I like the greens and yellow for a baby quilt but I do not care for the way it looks in the blues even though I like the blue fabrics. Go with your heart. If you aren't happy you won't enjoy making the quilt. Good luck.

MargeD 01-03-2014 07:33 AM

I think it would make a cute and very interesting baby quilt.

I like the green/purple/gold. the fabrics have matching designs so it doens't look at all haphazard. The blue is pretty, but I think the first is my favorite

That looks like a handy little gadget. This one's going on my list!

If you mean, ddnp it's a diagonal disappearing nine patch.

Quiltlady330 01-03-2014 08:24 AM

I like the unusual colorway.

matraina 01-03-2014 08:29 AM

I like the way it looks. Good thinking on your part.

Snooze2978 01-03-2014 10:06 AM

I'm wondering if you put all 4 yellow corners together to make another block in itself if that would look better?

Halo 01-03-2014 12:43 PM

I really like the first block best for a baby quilt even though the second block would be nice for an adult or teen quilt. You could call it D9P twisted. I have done the D4p with a twist & is very interesting. Your block is the same. I would continue with it.

gramquilter2 01-03-2014 01:36 PM

I like the look of the blocks and really like the blue.. interesting pattern.

This is what I was saying also.

redquilter 01-03-2014 02:29 PM

At first I thought it would be interesting but after seeing it next to the second block I see it's a little "off". Nice try. E for effort! We never know till we try something.

red-warrior 01-03-2014 05:16 PM

I think I like it but I too have trouble visualizing what it would look like as a whole quilt! Thanks for sharing and keep
us posted!
