I am curious about how near/far you quilters are to quilt shops. I believe I live in 'quiltshop heaven'! There are 7 quilt shops within 30 miles of where I live, as well as two Joann's! Each has its own 'personality' and what a range of choices, classes, ideas, etc.! It helps to have some willpower but what an advantage this is.

ktbb 01-17-2011 08:01 AM

I think I have at least tied with you...four LQS plus two Joanns and two Walmarts with fabric within 10 miles, another three LQS a Joanns and a Walmart within 40 miles, and still another 5 LQS, a Joann's and a Walmart within a days drive (go and return in a day...and in that day you can take in every one of those if you really push it and if the owners of a couple of them haven't decided to go fishing instead! As you say, each one has it's own personality and it's always a treat to go. A couple of them are really geared to tourists and it's fun to meet the shoppers when I stop by there.

raptureready 01-17-2011 08:04 AM

There's over a dozen within an hour's radius of me, six or 7 within 20 minutes to a half hour. I feel pretty fortunate. I also have one that's about 25 minutes away that has an attached retreat center. Check it out.

It's superb! In fact, I'm going there this Friday for a week long retreat.

BellaBoo 01-17-2011 09:08 AM

The closest to me are about 3 hours round trip in opposite directions. That makes it hard to go from one to the other. I visit the shops about once a month.

Living in Springfield, we are the major hub of Southwest Missouri. We are 35 minutes from Branson where Quilts & Quilts is located. We have several quilt shops,5 sewing machine shops,Hancock's, 2 Hobby Lobby's, 3 Walmart's that sell fabric, several fabric shops and this is all within the city limits. Then you can spread out to the north, south, east and west and add more to the numbers. It is nice to have variety and comparison shopping available. I know how lucky I am, 5 quilt/fabric shops are within 1 mile of my home.

sharkee 01-17-2011 11:37 AM

You guys are lucky. The closest one is 25 miles away, but the service is not very good and the one that I love is 54 miles away. Plus they took all the fabric out of the Walmart where I live and they closed the JoAnn's that was 50 miles away

kbs 01-17-2011 11:38 AM

I have a great shop about 15 miles, Jo Anns is 2 hours.

merry 01-17-2011 12:15 PM

2 quilt shops within 5 miles several within 15 miles

0tis 01-17-2011 07:29 PM

Mine is about 55 miles (one way) from where I live. The Joann's is about 2 hrs away. I really like my LQS and 95% of my business goes there - They really treat me well and I love their fabrics.

Tink74 01-17-2011 07:32 PM

Western Subarbs of Chicago are very good to me :-)

charmpacksplus 01-17-2011 07:33 PM

I'm moving to Idaho! Well, maybe not... I don't think I could handle the cold weather.

We have two quilts shops in town and a couple of other sewing/fabric shops, plus Joann's, Hancocks, and Hobby Lobby. Our Walmarts (all 4 of them) do not have fabric.

Mamawcj 01-17-2011 07:47 PM

It is 10 miles to my nearest LQS. The nearest WM w/fabric and Hobby Lobby are 60 miles. There is also a fabric store in the same town as WM & HL, but rarely go there - it's $$$$ and not very friendly.

candi 01-17-2011 08:00 PM

There are five quilt shops within a half an hour drive from my house, and like yours, each has its own specialty, but all have friendly staff and cozy atmosphere. I feel lucky in that department! There are also at least two JoAnns within 30 miles, maybe more. And I believe there may be a couple more quilt shops within an hour drive. Yup, it's quilt haven here:)

gaby4v 01-17-2011 08:07 PM

You are very lucky!!! No Joanns, no Hancocks, no LQS, no Wal-Mart. The closet would be 400 miles, the fabric district in Tokyo!!!! Thank god for the Internet!!!! Two more years and we will be back in the states!!!

samifel 01-17-2011 08:19 PM

Nearest quilt shop is about 2 hours away. We do have a walmart in town and a Mardens (salvage store with a great fabric selection)

craft phanatic 01-17-2011 08:38 PM

I live in Lancaster County, Pa so I can't even begin to count the number of shops near me.

pocoellie 01-17-2011 08:56 PM

We have a small quilt shop in our town, maybe 800 sq. ft., other than that the closest quilt shop is 80 miles away, Joann's is another 20 miles.

akgranny 01-17-2011 09:02 PM

am lucky to have a vey small lqs here in beautiful downtown seward, alaska, and more 90 miles across the peninsula and up in the big city, 120 miles away are s'more! but, now that i don't drive too musch any more, why , i let my fingers do the walking and visit all those online shops!

jaciqltznok 01-17-2011 09:05 PM

I only have one not so wonderful shop about 30 miles away, another tiny, but Ok in a pinch shop about 15 miles away...and NO Joanns, or Hancocks.just a crappy old hobby lobby with icky fabric here in this town...

70K people and NO place to buy good fabric...have to drive 2 hours to Wichita or 1.5 hours to OKcity!

I prefer to shop online or in TX...

didi 01-18-2011 03:19 AM

I'm about 40 miles to small quilt shop,(not friendly) WM, Hancock about another 30 miles. Do alot shopping online.

ruthrec 01-18-2011 03:31 AM

I have a Hancock's, Hobby Lobby, and Wal-Mart (that I rarely buy fabric from) just notions. There is a quilt shop in North Little Rock (30 miles) but I haven't been there. Am longing to go since I love Batiks and none of the stores in town have them. My favorite quilt shop was in Texarkana, Texas and I would stock up when visiting my daughter, but they went out of business. Said the economy shut them down. I got a lot of fabric for good prices. My stash and the local stores will keep me for a little while. What I don't have is access to classes and things like that. I have to use the internet for tips, suggestions, and this forum is like finding gold at the end of the rainbow for me.

MerryQuilter 01-18-2011 03:37 AM

pretty accessible here as well, fortunate.

Izaquilter 01-18-2011 03:41 AM

EVERY quilt shop is in a 40 mile radius. No matter which direction I go it's 40 miles.......well no we have had a 2 new ones start up but they aren't 'up to par' just yet. Giving them time then they will have my business. The good ones are 40 miles.

michelehuston 01-18-2011 03:46 AM

There is one about 30 miles that I refuse to go back to (poor customer service) and a joanns about 10 minutes from my house but I drive an hour about once a month to a quilt shop in Berlin Ohio that is absolutely wonderful!! The people are so friendly that I have a hard time leaving!!

azdesertrat 01-18-2011 03:53 AM

I have 3 quilt shops within 1 mile of my hhouse, a joanns and a hancocks also within a mile,in an hours drive, about 5 more

TWO Hobby Lobbys? Which 3 Walmarts sell fabric? We live just 50 miles east of Springfield. I'm curious!

Have a great time! I bookmarked the website for a retreat for my quilting friends. Only 10 hrs away that's not bad and love the prices.

CarrieAnne 01-18-2011 05:02 AM

We have 5 LQSs in my area, 2 JoAnns, and a Hobby Lobby. We also have two Walmarts, but they are getting rid of their fabric this month!

Are you near the quilt shop owned by Dina Pappas? She does a lot of watercolor quilts. Had her as a speaker at our LQS awhile back.

Just Jane 01-18-2011 06:30 AM

I've visited Branson a few times and one of my favorite places to visit there is Quilts & Quilts! LOVE IT!!! You are so lucky to live so close to it! Can't wait to go again! Maybe it's just as well I live as far away from it as I do! But the good news is that my daughter and her husband will be stationed at Whiteman AFB this summer, so I'll be "in the vicinity!"

MixtyMaxty 01-18-2011 07:24 AM

I,too, like Marden's. I just wish I lived a little closer - one is 50 miles, the other 60 or so. It's great to find brand name fabric at a reduced price.

Navy Wife 01-18-2011 07:49 AM

One is 2 miles away, and 4 more within 25 miles.

quilt3311 01-18-2011 07:50 AM

I have 2 shops about 20 miles, 1 45 miles, 1 50 miles and 2 at about 75 miles. Of course the very best one is the one fartherest away. One of the close ones has only been open about a year and they are really building their business, it will soon be better than the fartherest away.

Minister 01-18-2011 07:51 AM

How many shops are near and around Austin,tx? Anyone knows?

Ethel Hoffman 01-18-2011 07:56 AM

I'mwith you I live near Springfield and love the ease of shopping for fabrics and the choice of shops available

dorrell ann 01-18-2011 08:14 AM

I have one 10 miles away the rest are over 50 miles -lucky you

The closest quilt shop to me is about 18 miles away. There's a fabric store 13 miles away, and then there's Walmart. That's it folks.

EagarBeez 01-18-2011 08:52 AM

An hour drive one way to local Walmart, with limited selection, 4 to 5 hours one way to Joanne's

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 11:13 AM.
