I don't think you can buy all the dies you are going to want or need in one or two purchases. You will end up buying dies that you will never use and buying additional dies in the future that you never thought you would need or want. Just buy now what you know you will use. Think about what you cut on a regular basis or what you will. Eyed for quilts you plan to make. Also, no one can tell you what dies to buy. The dies that I might not be able to live without May just sit on your shelf collecting dust.

Recently I fell onto a super deal. I never "needed" an accuquilt but I thought I did. An elderly friend was moving and I got her pristine accuquilt in the original box with all her mats and dies for a few hundred dollars. I'm not a quilter per se but I have made quilts. Learning what to do with it seems daunting, but I was thinking it would be great for appliqué shapes and binding strips. Some of the dies are unopened. I don't know where to start.

Look on ebay and Amazon. Also the yahoo group "sewitsforsale" is a site for sewing stuff exclusively. No bidding. You do have to join but it's free. It's by and for sew-ers. Many who are selling dies are selling a group of them.

Bob, block on board. I think they are the ones where all of the shapes needed to cut that block are all on one die.

I love the Hunters Stars die

I love mine. I do a lot of applique work and have found it very helpful when cutting out pieces. There is one die that has flowers, leaves and also stems. I also do wool applique and it cuts wool great. I used a flower die with 5 petals an cut the petals apart and appliqued them like they had fallen from the flower. Also, on this same die. I took the same round flower and flipped the petals so it was a different shaped flower. Let your imagination go, you will love what you can do.
