But, back to my question...how old are we all? I'm willing to bet I'm not the only 38 year old mother of 3 children under the age of 12, eh?

Tell him quilting is for any age, not just grandmas. How does he thing grandmas get good at quilting if they don't do it when they are younger????? LOL I think you should tell him if he wants you to have a younger hobby, tell him you are now into collecting pretty colored gem stones!

I am in another online group and we have a young lady who started in our group at the age of 13. I think she just had her 15th birthday. And she uses a treadle machine. She collects them. In fact, I think she is the one who told me about this group.

Emily, are you out there?
Virginia, who is 71, but started sewing at age 4, in my grandmother's lap. It has been a wonderful journey and I don't intend on stopping anytime soon.

It think you should do whatever things make you happy or are relaxing for your personal fun time.

I am 31 with 3 kids under 9. I have been quilting on and off since I was a kid in 4-H. I have now really caught the quilting bug and can not get enough of it. My husband is deployed to Afghanistan and I have made a quilt for every bed in the house since he has been gone :)

granny18 10-01-2010 04:50 PM

Good for you. With all that you are going through, you need an outlet for yourself. Don't know where you get the time or energy with 3 little ones, to do anything extra.

I have a friend who's husband was deployed. She started making pillowcases for some of his fellow troupers. She would send one pillowcase every few weeks and the guys would have a drawing to see which one of them got the pillowcase. It was a big hit and something the guys looked forward to.

Please tell your husband how much we appreciate the sacrifice he is making for all of us.

So what is a hobby for your age group? Since when did age matter if you love something. I am 68 & have just started making quilt tops to quilt, but I have been quilting since I was 8. My mom's "quilting bees" included a couple of aunts, my mom & my grandmother and a few other ladies. my mom was in her 30s. Teach him to quilt, I bet he would love it.

You're never too young to sew or quilt. I'm 67, but have sewed since I was 9.

I missed that thread, so gonna tell my age now.
I turned 70 this year. I never minded turning 50 or 60 but there is somethng about 70 that seems old.

Anyway I have been sewing most of my life. To think that quilting is for grannys is sorta dumb. But then we all know men never get it right. (sorry guys that are in this group) :)

anniec55 10-02-2010 04:20 AM

Not at all!! I started to quilt when I was 30, single mom,(I will turn 55 tomorrow!) my husband thinks I am a dinosaur and the only one left quilting, plus doesn't understand why anyone " would cut up perfectly good material to turn around and sew it back together" just doesn't get it.... I don't expect him to, he's a number cruncher!!! Don't let him bother you, enjoy your gift! My DIL who is 24 loves to quilt and finds it to be a great avenue of release and artist expression.

I should be retired, but my daughter with 5 children and just 37 is learning to quilt.

bertadel 10-02-2010 06:02 AM

I'm 46. I just started quilting this year. I had the time to quilt while I was unemployed. I made 3 quilts. I just started working again last week so my quilting will slowdown. But it sure was fun when I had the time.

SewExtremeSeams 10-02-2010 06:27 AM

My oldest grandchild is 16 years old but I was quilting when I had my last child at 35 years old. One of my daughters made her first quilt when she was six. Retired Grandmas might have more time to devote to quilting. But quilting, especially in today's world, knows no age. You are current with your age!

nikki128 10-02-2010 07:34 AM

I'm 32 started quilting when I was 25.

krlowe 10-02-2010 12:28 PM

I'm 46 with two kids 16 and 14. I've been sewing since I was 11. I wanted to start quilting in my early 20's so I bought books but just couldn't get going. Finally started quilting about 8 years ago.

raynhamquilter 10-02-2010 04:31 PM

I'm 63. Maybe it's his way of wanting to take you dancing or just spend some time with you. Ask him.

That's actually a great idea! Use your stash to line your coffin....spend eternity wrapped in your favorite fabrics. I may actually make a quilt of my favorite fabrics to be buried with. Seriously! 8-)

Well, I have also requested that they put a thimble in my finger and thread a needle for me. I need something to do up there. Joseph might need another coat, ya know!!! And I have lots of fabric with bling!

EdieClay 10-02-2010 07:06 PM

I am 66 and have only been quilting for two years. I learned after I retired. Thankfully, there is no age limit or requirement for creating art, which is what I think quilting is. Quilters have an obligation to teach others, so that this amazing craft does not disappear.

finch 10-03-2010 04:06 AM

Quilting is time consuming..Maybe he feels neglected???

jdavis 10-03-2010 11:09 AM

Your DH isn't very diplomatic, is he?
Wouldn't it be funny if he got interested in quilting, too?
Have you told him there are gentlemen quilters here?

sewmom 10-03-2010 02:42 PM

54 today actually and I started about 10 years ago. In the words of Indiana Jones-It's not the years it's the miles! (may not be quoted perfectly)

Margie 10-03-2010 06:50 PM

Just wait until you see him taking a nap...then tell him that his "hobby" is for OLD MEN ..find an age appropriate one lol

Riversong 10-03-2010 07:51 PM

My granddaughter is just going on 4 and is already sewing squares together. She knows what a fat quarter, batting, charms, batiks, and paisley are,and most of the other quilting terms I use.I am 63,started quilting 20 years ago.

natalieg 10-03-2010 08:03 PM

TxCaRose 10-04-2010 05:02 PM

I belong to a quilt guild and we have all ages. Your husband does not know what he is talking about even back then,( what your husband calls grandma age, young ladies were quilters, as they were preparing for their upcoming nuptials.

Oh, I am 67

bjdemir 10-04-2010 08:53 PM

I'm 69 and started quilting about 2-1/2 years ago, although I have sewn since I was in 3rd or 4th grade through 4-H and had my own sewing business for 11 years.

akgranny 10-04-2010 10:21 PM

i'm seventy now, but fifty years ago i made a baby quilt for my first with the help of my elderly neighbors and then hand pieced a granma's garden, 70 by 8o inches that was much more than i should have attempted, for i didn't quilt again until a few years ago.

In my group the youngest is about 14yrs. and the eldest is 94 years old. so it does not matter how old you are as long as you enjoy the quilting and friendship of other people of all ages.

auntiehenno 10-05-2010 08:51 AM

68, with 1 daughter 38, three grandsons, 5,7 and 14 in a month. Let hubby know quilters ages are not important.

joyceinoh 10-05-2010 02:23 PM

A couple of people have suggested that maybe your husband wanted you to spend more time with him. So think of it like this, if he had a hobby that comsumed all his time would you like it?
We never know how long we have on this old earth, and what is more important then our time with each other.
(Other than quilting :) :D )

hulahoop1 10-05-2010 03:07 PM

I am 55. Made my first quilt 25 years ago, but didn't really get "addicted" until 3 years ago. However, I learned to sew when I was around 12.

JoanneS 10-05-2010 04:44 PM

I made my first quilt at age 32 - 38 years ago! My DGD did her first (probably her last!) handquilting stitches on a quilt that I made for her about 6 years ago. I included her on the label as co-quilter. She's artistic - but in photography. I tried to pass it on ~ ~ ~
